„In the fall budget, the government said it was exploring ways to increase private investment in Canada’s airports, which could include negotiating lease extensions with airport authorities, enabling development on airport lands, and examining airport lease formulas. **It also said it would “consider options for the privatisation of airports.”**
Interesting bit of information here, if these sources claims are accurate, then Carney government is starting to show its true neoliberal colours.
„Tuesday’s economic update reiterated that **Ottawa is looking at “alternative models of ownership” for airports**, and said it would introduce legislation “to ensure it can obtain the information necessary for a comprehensive evaluation of airport reforms.”
I understand government needs new sources of funding and revenue, but we should be alarmed by any further privatization of public assets.
The move to sell off stakes in our airports and set up a new national fund is essentially a high stakes strategy to find cash without raising taxes. While it might bring in private capital to build out green energy or new tech sectors, the reality is that these investors will expect a massive return on their money. That usually means higher costs for the people actually using the services. By shifting these assets into a new Crown corporation, the government is creating a layer of separation that can make direct oversight much harder. This specific structure allows for the privatization of airport operations which might modernize the facilities but only at the expense of the traveler. If this entity uses public money to fund projects based on political goals instead of actual financial merit, we risk losing control of our assets just to cover current budget gaps. It only works if every dollar is tracked and the public actually sees a benefit from the wealth being generated.
I am not educated enough to even understand this. If anyone who isn’t a pessimistic “liberals bad” can respond to this with a ELI5. That would be great.
Look at the risk of sounding conspiratorial I’ll try and frame this as unbiased as I can:
It’s concerning that specifically Brookfield has taken an interest in private airport infrastructure in Canada the past few years and now we’re hearing rumblings of the government considering selling off their stake in some airports.
What Canada should be doing is using non-renewable resource revenue to prop up the sovereign wealth fund. Oil, gas, those sorts of things will eventually be shifted away from, or see their exploitable reservoirs dwindle beyond economical recovery.
Aka the golden years end, and we need a means of ensuring that Canada’s economy is future ready, that we’re using proceeds from these things to fund education, r&d, and the transition to things we actually want, like green energy.
Looking at the comments in this thread, the amount of sloganeering and grandstanding shows the deep misunderstanding of privatization and what “neo liberal” economically actually means. As if neo liberal and privation = US policies = bad.
For example Europe has the highest % of privatization of airports in the world and the majority of its ATC is privatized. And arguably has some of the lowest flight ticket costs.
But people here are too blinded by partisanship to actually understand how it would actually work outside of some investors get money therefore must be bad. When some of these investors are your own pension funds.
Edit: Just to add for those public = good folks. Nearly all US commercial airports are government run along with ATC. And it’s very clear they’re not well run, or for those who are, the exception.
Therefore, it’s smart to separate and think what the actual result could be from the possible action rather than just assuming said stance (public/private) will result in your desired result.
