  1. Is that Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and a bit of Germany? Just tbc.

it’s always wild to see the sheer scale of the mismatch between landmass and gdp. the fact that you can fit the entire russian economy into basically just the benelux plus a chunk of germany is a top tier map porn moment tbh.

  3. GDP is a bit misleading though, especially in case of ruzzia

as a country with excess resources and limited exporting capabilities (for coal, gas, oil, all of it) they have cheaper energy, so if you make a cheaper product using cheaper energy it lowers your GDP while you get the same product, it’s not like they’re producing anything meaningful but even simple agriculture and steel production are a lot cheaper there

and on the other side of the spectrum there is good old US of A where healthcare insurance scams and such are making a good few % of the GDP

I am not saying russians have a good economy, I am just saying GDP is a bad metric, very vague

same with military spending, the Netherlands spending about as much as Turkey doesn’t mean they have same military capabilities

  4. Rest In Peace Ijsselmeer, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland & Schiermonnikoog,

  5. Nominal values aren’t representative of real economy.

For example, the Ruble doubled in value from March to June 2022, and so did nominal Russian GDP. But nothing changed in terms of actual produced goods (like bombs…).

Don’t underestimate your opponents. Use appropriate data.

  6. I dislike Russia as much as you’d expect, but many times a country’s geostrategic position helps a hell of a lot more than pure statistics. Iran is keeping the US at bay even if it has a GDP 60 – 80 times smaller just because it can control the right trade node with a small amount of effort.

Cant eat money. Russia is self sustaining with $75 trillion of untapped natural resources.

I wonder if switzerland+surounding area would be smaller or larger (northern italy and southern germany are both pretty rich).

what would it be like if Belgium and The Netherlands had totally phased out Russian gas imports?

Wauw, we got a united kingdom of the Netherlands AND we got Kleverland? Hell yeah.

If you remove natural resources and petrochemicals Denmark exports more goods than Russia

And yet with such economic power Europe is afraid of Muscovites.. time to build good military

  13. This is a weird map of the Netherlands. Most of the Wadden Islands are gone and the IJsselmeer became land

  14. Honestly they fell so far, and deservedly so. For example, in 2025 they exported less total value than Poland, despite all those shadow fleet and Chinese gas pipelines shenanigans. Their energy behemoth, Gazprom, which not long ago supplied most of Europe with energy now has a smaller market cap than polish Orlen (refinery and fuel station corporation)
