  1. This is the first time I recall a Prime Minister actually bringing up the state of 24 Sussex. I wonder if this singles if we might finally see some progress made in regards to upgrading or replacing it.

    >“You’re not going to see me at 24 Sussex, but I would like to see my successors at 24 Sussex in some way, shape or form,“ Carney said in an interview Monday with *CBC News: The National* host Adrienne Arsenault

    That is a SOLID quote.

Anything they do to 24 Sussex is going to take 4-8yrs to really do. It takes a PM willing to invest for the future at the cost of present political points to make 24 Sussex a residence that a PM could be proud to host dignitaries at.

    >Former prime minister Justin Trudeau moved his family into Rideau Cottage, a red brick home on the grounds of Rideau Hall, when he was elected in 2015. With 24 Sussex unfit for habitation, Carney also resides at Rideau Cottage.

This is what really bugs me, Trudeau had COVID to really do some work on 24 Sussex, he had the political points he could use, so much so he called an early election to shore himself up. But didn’t address this problem.

I’m glad Carney is talking about it, and his framing of it not being for him is a good way to keep political rhetoric down.

Is it even that much of a political liability? It seems like more of a narrative than reality, I feel that most Canadians agree on the importance of having a livable, functional primary residence for the PM.

  4. Carney should invite the media for a tour there to get the dilapidated state of the building on public record. That way, he’ll have done his due diligence against bad-faith attacks of „wasteful spending“ when spending reasonable money to either renovate or rebuild.

  5. Hear me out:
    Property Brothers renovate Rideau Hall

Think of the marketing revenue, it will pay for the house! They can then move on to other political white elephants: Trumps ballroom, Kim Jong Un’s library, etc

Someone at Crave needs to pitch this ASAP

Perhaps so, but it’s an accurate representation of the state of housing in our country so I’m not bothered by it.

When working class Canadians can once again afford modest homes to raise families in, the Prime Minister can go ahead and spend my tax dollars fixing up his own home.

I feel like this is a winning issue for Carney if he wants it.

People want to feel pride and they want to see things get built.

So pitch it as a Canadian pride project, using Canadian expertise and materials. It’s a very visible project that isn’t that complicated. Get building on it immediately and pray the other parties come after you for it.

The PM’s home should be a reflection of our nation, and should be designed with pride, security and furthering the ability of the PM to do their work. I’m okay withe money being spend on this. It is a job perk for one of our country’s most important jobs. It is also a perk that the individual doesnt get to keep; it remains with the position and with the nation. Let’s get it done.

  9. Just fucking convene an all-party parliamentary committee and have them unanimously recommend something, and be done with the thing already. Have Carney promise not to live in it for the duration of his term if necessary (which it sounds like he’s already done).

I’ve been saying this for years. I don’t care who does it. I wouldn’t even mind Carney/Poilievre living in it. Just fix it.
