AI may very well drive a labor crisis but for these companies it feels like the investment in AI is the root cause right now
they spent years telling us to learn to code, now the code learns to replace us.
I do not think it will be unemployment that causes the worse disruption, but underemployment. I can see people taking jobs that pay less, multiple jobs, side gigs, etc.. Plus, you have the younger generation not being able to get into their fields, and add pressure to the underemployed sector.

I dont trust this. Both companies spent billions on AI. Investors demand results. This gives them what they want. Meanwhile Meta is hopelessly behind in AI because of the Metaverse debacle. Ofcourse they say the revolution is here. They have to.

Tech companies have been outsourcing U.S. jobs for years to places like India, where salaries are way lower. Meanwhile, a lot of American students are taking on debt, and it’s getting harder for them to land well-paying jobs afterward.
Ah the weekly AI marketing fearmongering. They’re spinning layoffs to show everyone that AI is helping them save money on labour costs. If you use their tech, also you can get rid of your employees!
Same strategy as before. Mass layoffs, quietly hire back up, then another layoff round. Allows them to continually tell the story of ‘increased efficiency’ rather than over hiring. 44,942 is the number of Meta employees pre-pandemic in 2019. Let’s say 58,604 if we want to be generous and use 2020. Until Meta starts approaching those numbers I won’t take this narrative on AI seriously. It just seems Zuckerberg is addicted to the stock pump he can get from the increase in EBITA by announcing reduced headcount.
I dream of a day every single one of these massive companies ceases to exist. We can do without whatever the fuck they are doing now. The days of companies like Microsoft and Google benefiting the common man are over. I would prefer seeing smaller companies take the reigns.

Its been here for almost entire year…. its an everything crisis, thats why the boys at davos have been loading people up with debt… housing crisis debt… They dont want a population exodus and these same people are the ones controlling banking, finance, equity, stock market…
Meta and microsoft and google, all know this, they sat front and center at Trumps innaguration. Its the age of technofuedalism, and they dont want to actually pay for socialist support policies to help people, they want the status quo of debt servatude and gig economy that profits the stock markets, and dividens from the labour. „people with find jobs“, „market will sort itself out“ etc… we need a systemic change and its coming, either it comes or we have a serious problem.
Plus the cnbc title is misleading, Meta fired 20k jobs but they will rehire many people under new contracts, as has been done for decades now, as companies restructure and cut lossess, and cut jobs then rehire at lower rates…Thats why unionisation has been on the rise, this is evil corporate way they exploit labour and alter contracts without having to actually pay the people anything for the trouble. (Desperate workers and complient pliable workers that accept bad deals..)
I wonder where this will all lead, when people losing their jobs reaches a critical mass and more and more are without work, without income, losing their homes. Sounds like societal anarchy will be the result, and what will the government and these mega-corporations do to fix it?
And if the answer is „nothing“, then what will happen and who will pay the price when the people eventually start fighting back?

These CEOs are using AI as a cover for bad management. They can literally throw billions down the toilet on shitty investments then go „oops! we had to fire thousands cause of AI, you see.“

They’ve just been adding employees and stacking dumb features that nobody needs for too long. Less employees hopefully means less dumb features so I support it.
Also it’s hard to have sympathy for anyone that works for zuck by choice (I’m gonna give contractors a pass).
It’s not AI taking jobs as much as it is the concentration of money not trickling down to the people that will spend it to keep people employed. I would love to eat out more, go to museums, sporting events, concerts and employ all the people that are needed for these experiential events, but I cannot afford it because my fucking power bill is too expensive.

Every fortune 500 company pushing tech layoffs is because of outsourcing to India. The scary part is seeing every US Bank outsource a majority of their IT to India, which has zero of those banks in its country.

If Microsoft is finally admitting it then it’s likely gone way beyond a simple labor crisis.
All of them have cash flow issues right now because how AI infrastructure is financed. They either cut jobs to make balance sheets look better and hope the train rocks on, or they post the real thing, blow up the whole utopia bubble and we will be in a different version of dotcom crash again
