I think they deserve it. I served in Bosnia and always refer to myself as a peacekeeping veteran. There is a difference.

>According to federal law, only those who fought during the First World War, Second World War and the Korean War are officially considered war veterans. Veterans deployed to conflicts since the end of the Korean War in 1983 have never been given that designation.
What the fuck is that shit?

Successive Fed Govts have continued to minimize the role the CAF has played in the govts bidding.
There is a price to pay when putting our Forces in harms way and each and every govt, both Cons and Libs have tried to take the cheap way out.
It is a common fact that most Veterans submitting disability claims get denied on the first application, this is after a Veterans has waited several months or years for a ruling.
The govts and Canadians talk a good story about “ supporting the troops“ but in my view and experiences it is mainly lip service.

I feel like they have a good point. An Afghan vet is still a vet. Still were in battle. Still got shot at.

This sounds like common sense, what they’re pushing for

If you fought in an active war or you were stationed/contributed in some other way to said war, you should be a war veteran. Why wouldn’t you be? Let’s not play semantics with calling it an invasion or that you have to be in an active fire area to be a participant in a war.
Canada even was an active *combat* participant in the Gulf War, and others, while some other countries were only in the form of supportive roles, such as medical. So, I’m sorry is being recognized as a war veteran when you are based purely on the generation you’re from?

I know solders that have served and have never been in a war zone. And VAC considered them as Veterans

Take it from a federal servant. The thing to remember is that unless it involves outside political pressure and organization, don’t expect anything that makes sense to follow any natural course from the federal government. The career upper-level beaureucrats might as well be residing in Narnia inasmuch as they are able to relate to the ground-level real world.

The legion doesn’t consider GWOT troops as veterans and they get treated as such.
Fuck the legion.

This may be naive to suggest, but maybe it’s good that Canada is an outlier in this regard. „Special recognition as a war veteran“ kinda comes across as glorification of war — something we as a country obviously don’t want to encourage.
Are there special government benefits that come along with being designated a war veteran as opposed to just a veteran? If so, what?

Way I look at it, if you have deployed to an active war zone, then you should be considered a war veteran.
If you deployed to Bahrain as part of the logistics train, nope. But if you had to convoy through Afghanistan under threat of IED’s, then absolutely.

> In a statement issued to CTV News, the Department of Veterans Affairs said that the Veterans Well-being Act offers a designation of a “Special Duty Area” which provides members with the same coverage that is available to those from prior conflicts. When asked about changing the designation, the department said it wouldn’t change the benefits offered to Canadian veterans.
> “Changing the categorization of these Veterans and members from “Special Duty Service” to “Wartime Service” would not result in any change to offered benefits,” said Marc Lescoutre, a spokesperson with Veterans Affairs Canada.
OK so that’s good, they aren’t missing out on any benefits or support. It’s just a designation change and more about recognition. Probably makes sense to update it for the times but I’d say at least from the general public they’ve been given roughly the same recognition considering nobody knew about these differences.

They way I look at it, unless this makes actual changes to policy that impact people, this is just a waste of time.

This is ridiculous. Who would stand up for Canada if government doesn’t support them after they stand up for Canada?
