      Very sensible. Practically speaking, how do they identify former soldiers? Article mentions 1300 currently banned but how did they find them?

      Simple solution: Two questions on a visa application.

      1. “Have you ever served in the armed forces of the Russian Federation or any associated forces as a soldier, employee, civilian or military contractor”

      2. Did any of your service occur from 2022 to the present day.

      They self select by telling the truth. If they lie, it’s fraud and makes them deportable and bannable.

      What will happens to soldiers who fought in illegal wars? The Gulf War, the Iraq War, the War in Afghanistan.

      Military or civil employees can’t travel abroad much if at all due to their own regulations. It’s a solution to an imaginary problem.

      So almost every russian male over 18, but actual people that is tied with rulling circle can roam free?
      It is mandatory service here for almost every one and restrictions for whom can be drafted are lowered each year. It is pretty hard to dodge this draft without ties to government or fucking up own life.

      Can we extend this to include anyone who ever served in the illegal campaign of mass murder that was the Iraq War i.e. soldiers from the US, UK, etc? And Israeli soldiers who were involved in the criminal facilitation of illegal settlers in the west bank or those who took part in the Gaza genocide?

      Agree 💯. A lifetime ban on anyone aiding the Russian illegal invasion of Ukraine.

      They should face legal consequences.

      That also goes for soldiers.

      I do not understand why we don’t start with expulsion of families of the Russian oligarchs and politicians living it up in London, Paris and the Mediterranean

      This is not as useful as it may seem. For example, veterans of the Croatian and Serbian war travel freely across borders. Unless, they have an indictment for war crimes. Then, they can cross the border only in one direction.

      Yeah they should be banned. I think exceptions can be made in case of people who can reasonably prove that they surrenderd the first chance they could and didn’t committed any war crimes. That’s going to do a lot of good since that would encourage surrender. Not only Russia will loose a soldier, he can be also be exchanged for on of ours.

      I’m curious, how exactly are you going to identify those who fought for Putin? After all, without a military ID, it’s impossible to identify them, and even if you force them to produce one, there are still those who actively donated to the Russian army, prisoners who fought for Wagner, and others. And yes, you could ban all military personnel from entering, but many of them served on conscription service in Siberia and the Far East and didn’t fight on Ukrainian territory; many of those who served don’t know how to fight; there are too many questions regarding the implementation of this initiative, although considering that many of those currently fighting against Ukraine will ultimately die from alcohol, and 99 percent will never travel to Schengen countries

      OR you could finally liquidate all the Russian oligarch money, cut all corporate ties, and kick the wealthy Russians out….but sure go after the people fleeing and in despair in Russia too.

      How would you even go about that? You can’t see from some’s face or passport if they were in the military, let alone where they were stationed if they were and when.

      The only thing that you can do is a blanket ban of every Russian man over the age of 17, and probably every Russian woman over that age too if they allow women to enlist.

      Only soldiers? My city is a favourite of Russian oligarchs and their families. They’re more of them here than ever. They rob Russians, support (financially and politically) Putin, yet enjoy luxurious holidays, houses and lifestyles in the West that is ostensibly their enemy. Years ago we were told that we shouldn’t isolate Russians, especially wealthy Russians, as that may make them more pro-Putin and being nice to them may help temper Putin’s worst habits. Fast forward to today, and yeah – no need to explain where we are. They’re already beneficiaries of both their system and ours, and treating Russians with kid gloves has not made a damn bit of difference to Putin or his regime. Russian passport? Without diplomatic dispensation, ban them all. I am fed up.

      Banned, sure, but for life? We didn’t even bad German soldiers from WW2 for life. It doesn’t seem proportional, given that many of the soldiers don’t really have great options to choose from. I think banning Putin and the ruling class for life would make much more sense.
