Extreme example, if an Russian bomb hit central London, Manchester, Edinburgh, or any major city, I would bet that statistic would quickly change, and it isn’t actually that bad to begin with, not many want to die in a war.

    2. trmetroidmaniac on

Surprised it’s that low. I’m not staking my life for an economic zone of fungible human capital.

    3. No shit lol, it’s not their country – they just live here.

Send the landlords, they’ve got something to lose

    4. Necessary-Product361 on

Well it depends on the war doesnt it? If the Russians somehow landed i’d bet most people would want to fight. Meanwhile, if it is another illegal war in the MiddleEast as America’s lap dog, most would rather not die for that

    5. WorldApprehensive705 on

It’s about what’s at stake. Russians sailing to invade London? I bet the stats would change quickly.

Following the braindead yanks to another war in middle east no matter how much propaganda you push that the threat is imminent for the UK? You’d be stupid not to pass!

    6. Can we be clear that this doesn’t mean that you’re not a patriot or you don’t love your country?

It’s about a young generation not being interested in dying because 5 old millionaires don’t get along , no thanks

    7. I mean, it’s not really surprising that a generation who have only seen the British Army be used to fight illegal wars at the behest of America might not wish to be used as pawns by risking their lives in future wars.

My Grandad was an obsessive cyclist and wanted to do the Tour de France.
He ended up on the Arctic Convoy instead.

These polls are just nonsense. No one wants to fight until they are given no choice.

    9. Krabsandwich on

Other than WW1 it has been a pretty consistent view that very few would fight if it came to war. In the 1930’s the Oxford Union passed a motion stating under no circumstances would I fight for King and country [King and Country debate – Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_and_Country_debate).

No one is keen to go fight unless they are a bit odd but if push comes to shove people go as the alternative is usually worse.

    10. Gentle_Snail on

Thats actually pretty good as advanced economies go. Tbh its consistent trend internationally that percentages are low when a country doesn’t feel threatened, but numbers increase when they are.

In Canada the number of young people who would fight for Canada was constantly trending downwards, until America started threatening annexation and now its trending upwards.

    11. This is because young people haven’t experienced an existential war to Britain in living memory- it’s all been pointless sandbox wars since the Falklands.

So I don’t really blame them.

    12. I’m in my 60s, born in the States and I would! So rest easy, everyone. I got this.

    13. jammythesandwich on

Lack of nuance as usual; there’s a massive difference between being sent to somewhere halfway around the globe to fight and fighting on your own shore thats been invaded.

I honestly don’t blame though for holding the position.

      What are they fighting for?
Fewer jobs, practical unattainable mortgage, cost of living crisis, little chance of retirement, heavy tax burden thats constrain entrepreneurship and the steady erosion of freedoms/ tolerance.
They’ve also grown up seeing veterans get minimal care to boot for life changing injuries.

      It’s hardly inspiring

The ladder has been firmly pulled up for decades and essentially any form of unwritten covenant between the youth and government has been shat all over, shredded and stamped on.

    14. Jared_Usbourne on

Most people don’t want to fight in a war full stop, this has always been true. The people who fought in the world wars would almost always rather have been at home, they just weren’t given the choice.

    15. CanaryWundaboy on

All depends on how the question is framed. Would I volunteer to go and fight in the latest American-instigated Middle East disaster? Hell no. Would I take up arms to defend this country and my family if the Russians were threatening to invade? Of course.

    16. Warm-Marsupial8912 on

Can’t say I blame them. The country isn’t doing much for them either

    17. Alex-rhhgfff on

There’s no way I’m dying for a load of billionaires. Our generation actually listened in school and understand the horrors of war

    18. ZeroEffectDude on

i think i would fight against an invading alien force. that;’s about it. or werewolves.

    19. Who would have guessed that young people screwed over by a country aren’t willing to fight for it.

Send the landlords, the boomers and the flagshaggers before we send more of our young to die in a war caused by bitter old men.

    20. SquashyDisco on

Defending the UK vs Attacking another nation is the nuance here.

I don’t want to fight for Britain in Iraq, but I’d fight for Britain in the South Wales Valleys.

    21. Forsaken-Feed2740 on

Why would they? Liberals have turned our country into a dumping ground for unsavoury people from around the world, essentially destroying it.

That needs to be undone first before you can expect anyone to want to fight for their country.

    22. Let the older house owners fight for the country. The people with all the wealth in the stock market. They own it. The rest of us are just renters and own nothing.

    23. Why? The old have stolen their future, kicked up the financial ladder, banned what they enjoy and censored what they read, and if they complain they’re told they’re too soft and should work harder, all to prop up the gold plated pensions and cruise companies. Half is a good result if you ask me.

    24. superpantman on

I highly doubt the UK will get into a conventional war anyway. The threat is Russia the battleground is the sea. The army obviously needs to start recruiting hard but I doubt a draft would be necessary

    25. I wouldn’t have said the numbers were any better in the 80s or 90s. So why would that be surprising now?

    26. That seems fine, we have like 9 million 20-29 yr olds.

      There’s currently about 200k servicemembers.

If a war pops up that actually needed 4.5million of us to fight then we are shafted anyway

    27. SureSell6750 on

When you think about it, isn’t it really odd to assume regular people would be willing to die in a war, and to think it’s scandalous if they’re not

    28. Illustrious_Dig_2556 on

Why would they? This country doesn’t give two shits about their interests. At best they’re a cash cow to keep the Ponzi scheme that is the Triple-Lock chugging along.

    29. Far_Excitement_1875 on

People can’t conceive of a scenario where Britain is really threatened as it was in WWII, so the baseline is whether people would fight in a war in the Middle East. If the enemy were across the Channel, signups would be near unanimous.

    30. SC_W33DKILL3R on

Really why should they? The boomers are taking everything they can get from them, they would still tax their service wages to pay the boomer pension triple lock.

The reason the forces are in such a state is that boomers voted for greed and tax cuts rather than strengthening the forces and providing for the younger generations. Then to top it all off the boomers voted for Brexit to deny the young many of the same opportunities they had.

    31. InformationNew66 on

This is great news. It means there is pressure on the government to avoid war.

    32. If they want to attract new, young recruits, they should pay better than the current Army Reserve rate and do better with advertising their Flexible Service scheme, which allows you to work part time. The Army’s current marketing makes it seem a bit cultish, where you’re locked in for life and have little prospects of personal growth outside of their regimented system. Sure, some people like that, but most don’t.

    33. FutureSleep8123 on

“Never” is a long time and covers a broad spectrum of unforeseen contexts that may affect that percentage, up or down.

    34. The Oxford Union voted in 1914 that people wouldn’t go to war! Yet only a few months later, they marched off to fight for King and Country

The difference here though is that, for the last 27 years, since Labour got power in 1997 the left-leaning establishment has promoted anti-UK narratives especially in schools. So, can anyone expect young people, who have been taught to view their own country only negatively, in terms of our history, identity, and social issues, would suddenly feel motivated to defend it?

    35. What type of war? The going over there war or the working from home war comes to you?

I wouldn’t fight in some other countries because some Pm or MP thinks it a cracking idea.
But if there are landing craft at Newhaven, then I don’t think it’s a choice rather a necessity.

    36. Familiar-Bug2664 on

      Kinda depends.

Would i go fight in Afghanistan? Probably not

If the barbarians were at the gates tho, I Probably would

    37. Depends on the war? Defence against invasion yes, wee imperial adventure or worse still wee imperial adventure to maintain lapdog status like Iraq…then no thanks

The problem with joining any military is you are outsourcing your morality to politicians who have little

    38. skywalkers_glove on

When they are struggling to pay rent and keep a basic standard of living they have very little skin in the game. I don’t bandage the ones who wouldn’t go to war

    39. sumplookinggai on

It shouldn’t be surprising considering that schools from primary up to university are literally teaching kids to hate the UK, that the British are responsible for slavery, that Churchill was a Nazi, and so on.

On top of that, the majority of young people will never be able to own their own home, meaning that they don’t have anything worth fighting for. How can we expect young people to fight when they don’t have skin in the game.

    40. vaguelypurple on

„You’ll own nothing and be happy“

„Wait why don’t the peasants want to die for us billionaires!?“

    41. Space2Bakersfield on

The fuck has this country done for young people? Send the MPs and landlords. They’re the stakeholders here right

    42. Half of young people?

So taking that to mean 18-30 year olds that means a recruitment pool of about 4 million people?

      Sounds ok I guess?

Edit: 18-24 would be about 2 million so still, fair numbers.

    43. Yup. When you offer people very little, they’ve nothing to lose in seeing what happens with some other arrangement that might arise from a war.

    44. urbanspaceman85 on

That’s what happens when their parents and grandparents consistently vote to destroy their future. They will never, ever take responsibility for it though.

    45. Lady-Spangles on

The social contract has been torn to bits. It’s no wonder they would refuse to sacrifice their lives for a country that continually denigrates them while chipping away at every social safety net older generations took for granted.
