Punishing the Manager for doing his job is a disgrace and Supermarkets who do this should have a Boycott.

Start to put up pictures of Adult shoplifters in the window. If they want it removed they should have to pay back the money for what they stole. Stop Mollycoddling them like they are decent members of society. They are ToeRags and should be named and shamed.

It’s been a good 20 years since I worked in retail but I remember being told to not confront shoplifters. And why the fuck would I? I don’t get paid enough for that. I’m not trained to do it. It’s ultimately not my stock or shop to protect.

Sorry but I don’t empathise with these idiots. He will have been told time and time and time again to not confront shoplifters. If he wants to confront criminals then go get a job with the police or as a security guard.

I don’t know why people keep getting sacked for this stuff. Can’t even be bothered to read the article. But as a passing thought, why are people willing to risk being punched or stabbed to protect a US private equity firm?

Your life is more valuable than some groceries.

      >“The health and safety of all colleagues and customers is of paramount importance to Morrisons. We have very clear guidance, procedures and controls in place to protect our colleagues and customers from the risk of harm, which must be strictly followed.

While I deeply sympathise with the guy, it’s hard to argue with this. There’s a very real risk that by intervening directly, the manager could have put himself or others at risk of getting stabbed. That’s something no employer is going to want to risk, particularly one as large and public facing.

That said, there is a middle ground. He should have been disciplined rather than sacked.

A lot of these cases are because someone wanted to feel like batman for a day. Don’t confront shoplifters. You’re explicitiy told not to. And you shouldn’t risk your life to protect a billionares property.

    6. Pretty brutal they invented a machine to totally delete 30 years of his life, they could have stopped at just sacking him.

If there’s no punishment for shoplifting then why does anyone pay for anything?…

This wasnt a spur of the moment decision, he had been previously warned against doing this.

He wasn’t sacked for tackling a shoplifter, he was sacked for not following company policy, being told off for not following company policy snd doing it again.

Don’t risk it all for an employer, do your job and go home.

I have been in shops where people just work in and grab anything and walk out without paying. Law-less Britain

All for staff safety but I don’t agree with todays societal approach of do nothing for fear leading to the zero consequence world we’ve made for ourselves.

      Security isn’t the managers job.

Why the hell is he putting himself into danger for £50 off groceries?

I have worked for the same company for 15 years. Someone could walk in and start stealing laptops and I’d probably hold the door for them. Not my problem.

No more shopping In Morrisons for me. I don’t need to be loyal to them anymore.

I knew someone I loved dearly with kleptomania , no food or anything they dont tend to sell stuff they need or for personal use , she would just give it to me and family for free some of it was testers and that was gross, they ended up killing themselves , not everyone who shoplift is scum

I always get downvoted when I mention them

    16. I worked for Morrisons for 15 years, and if some meth head Stoke a pack of donuts at least ten managers and staff would run the length of the store and car park to get it back.

      An area manager at the time said something to us once that really stuck with me;

As a store/manager team, nobody minds haemorrhaging money in five figures a week through waste and damages and over production; but you’ll chase someone for £1 worth of shrink.

      It is crazy.

He was apparently told not to do this! Yet he did, I don’t condone the over zealous HR dept though.

    18. Every supermarket will have a policy that says don’t intervene with shoplifters. It’s nearly impossible to be sacked for following policy, it’s very easy to be sacked for not following policy.

He’s a store manager so there shouldn’t be any excuse for something like this.

    19. AtomBombBabyx on

He sounds like an absolute sad sack to be fair, as all supermarket middle managers are. Why you don’t wrap your whole identity around your job if it’s stacking shelves.

    20. SteakSandwichSideEye on

The shoplifters in this ccountry must be seriously loving this. All these news stories making it even clearer for them that they won’t be stopped when they steal from shops.

its not about saving the corp some losses

this isnt someone desperate to feed their family tonite this is someone targeting the highest value and most readily shiftable items in the store

its a smug prick who thinks he’s untouchable, repeatedly taking the piss *out of you* to the point you take it personally

so no he shouldn’t have jeopardize his job – his big mistake was to sort it out on duty and in view of the store cameras Theres a time and a place and that wasnt it

    22. I think this bit where he kicked him into a man hole shouting ‘THIS IS ASDA’ probably was a step to far
