Though it feels a little misleading to lump in private companies launches with the US or other place of origin, since they have vastly different objectives and mission profiles. Could you break those into another color?

Looks like the Russians were launching about 5x what the US was through the 70s and 80s. What were they getting in return for all those launches? My impression was that soviet spy satellites were less common/capable than US satellites through the Cold War. Besides the repeatability of the Soyuz (?) launches, what were the Soviets good at in all those launches?
