I’ll be ready for the downvotes:
In daily life it’s almost too French centric.
Well. It’s omnipresent for clear and practical reasons and there’s nothing wrong with that per se
I’d argue Luxembourgish is just as present, but in personal settings
When it comes to writing, I prefer French over German and Lux. Few folks can write proper Lux correctly and, for anything more remotely technical, Lux gets tricky. German tends to get too tricky for technical correspondence.
For oral communication, it’s IME a good mix: Only looking at official languages + English: Lux and French are sharing first place followed by English and German coming in last.
Again, my experience, but I noticed an increase in people wanting to learn Lux.
Luxembourg being a multilingual country, with an impressive concentration of polyglots makes it awesome and attractive.
Why create all this fuss around something enriching?
Nothing like some good ol‘ French bashing. Yawn.
French is too dominant indeed. I even have the feeling sometimes that French speaking crossborders treat Luxembourg as their colony and we facilitate it by using French everywhere
I am a native FR/EN speaker. Luxembourgish is by far the language I use the most outside of my family circle. It really depends where you work.
Very basic article, nothing new.
The complaint by ASTI last year about the risk of decline of the use of french was strange, given that it’s still the most dominant language in Luxembourg in the workplace.
You could live in Luxembourg easily without speaking a single word of Luxembourgish. Every interaction can be handled in French, communes, administration, shopping, everything is possible in French. It’s often not possible in Luxembourgish, especially private businesses.
Socialising with Luxembourgers is, of course, preferred in Luxembourgish but even that isn’t mandatory.
I personally do think it would be nice to be able to speak more Luxembourgish in every day situations… I’m stuck at the B1+ level because there’s nowhere to bridge the gap. I’m stuck between classrooms and being dropped straight in to C2. But the reality is, if I were speaking from a practical and career perspective, polishing my French would be far more beneficial.
> Do you guys agree that French is still omnipresent in Luxembourg?
Duuuhhh. Everything in this damn country is in french. Every letter you get is in french. Our constitution and laws are all in french.
For me personally it is kind of tiring and stressing to speak french for anything over a few seconds. I have a pretty good accent so french people are even surprised when i tell them i am not a native speaker. Still, really really not enjoy speaking french.
Thats why i enjoy being in germany. I like the german sprache and everyone has to speak german or either goodbye.
Also luxembourgish is way closer to german than to french so naturally most luxembourgers prefer german over french.
tldr: f*ck french
I like their baguettes tho.
Lmao at the downvotes😂😂😂 Why so butthurt?
Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose…

what’s more impressive is how this is even a topic in Luxembourg where the vast majority of service workers actually have to come from France / Belgium to fill in job vacancies. Moreover, laws and constitution are in French, and it’s one of the official administrative languages. This on top of all the cock-sucking to German / Germans / Germany is a big yawn and i’d risk saying just an evident sign of french-phobia in this country
This topic has been discussed ad-nauseum…
