      A gas field is surely a national resource. Take it over and f*CK the datacenter – all the latter is good for is replacing human jobs and using water

      This angers the fuck out of me. Why is a private company a. allowed to profit off of our natural resources b. allowed to do so without providing any benefit to those whose resources they are using?

      Disgusting.

      Everyone write to your MPs this should be used to cheapen energy for all and owned publicly.

      Using a volatile organic compound to mine a volatile online commodity.

      Regardless of whether you’re pro or anti fossil fuels, this is a dumb use of a natural resource, simply for enriching a few rather than being used for public energy.

      Is this even that economical? Surely could just slap some solar panels on, a wind turbine up and some battery storage and it won’t cost as much over the operation.

      Nobody with a functioning brain would burn gas just for bitcoin. Youd add battery selling some at peak demand to the grid, and you can shut down mining during peak demand (as far as I know, without harming your mining yield per MWh).

      But people moaning about this, remember that mining BTC essentially brings capital to the UK, the owner could then reinvest in renewables and other things, theoretically, which does something useful.

      Reabold, the investing company focused on developing strategic gas projects for European energy security, notes the recent media article in the Telegraph newspaper on 19th April 2026 and issues the following clarifications.

      The significant onshore natural gas resource at the West Newton site in Yorkshire has and will continue to be progressed for the benefit of UK energy security, which is particularly important at this time of significant geopolitical uncertainty. In addition, Reabold will continue to engage with all stakeholders, both locally and nationally, to ensure the optimal development pathway for West Newton is achieved.

      The Company is exploring the potential to deploy a small-scale power generation facility at the West Newton A well site to mine bitcoin from initial flows of gas following the upcoming well workover, to demonstrate the ability to use West Newton gas to fuel datacenter developments that will be crucial to the future UK economy.

      Successful implementation of such a project could allow for the development of a larger scale data centre at site, which would not preclude the potential for gas to grid, or gas to industrial consumption development options.

      Reabold believes that the natural gas resources at West Newton and further prospective resources on the PEDL 183 licence can be used for the benefit of all stakeholders and is committed to facilitating this outcome.

      Bitcoin and all cryptocurrency should just be banned. It’s only use is to criminals and scammers and it consumes vast amounts of energy and water to „mine“. Utterly worthless, stupid invention.
