This has become such a huge disaster for Eby that I wonder if it pushes him towards stepping down a Premier? In a matter of weeks he went from a confidence motion on this to just a regular vote to we are actually going to do nothing because the party is divided on the issue. He’s had a pretty bad last year and this is just piling on.

Eby’s premiership is really on the ropes now.

First, pausing DRIPA was so important that he was willing to put his government on the line over it by making it a confidence vote. Then, once the opponents in caucus effectively said they were going to vote against it anyway, he backed down showing that he didn’t actually mean it.

Then, he said, okay so I will table a DRIPA pause that isn’t a confidence vote. And, once again, after facing pushback, he decided to u-turn and not even bother to table it showing, once again, he didn’t actually mean it.

To paraphrase the best text on American politics (that, of course, being *Veep*), David Eby at present seems to have two settings; no decision and bad decision. He clearly no longer is fully in control of his caucus if even the threat of a confidence vote and subsequent costly general election is not enough to rally everyone to his side. He has now been forced to withdraw even the watered down approach he tried to offer on this file post confidence vote u-turn.

A major reset is needed for things to proceed. Maybe Eby can accomplish it, but he’s burnt a lot of political capital in a very short amount of time.

Can this guy just fucking resign already? It’s just constant ceding issues to the right flip flop this flip flop that he’s such a spineless premier that in the end he’s gonna lead the bcndp to another electoral collapse like the 2001 provincial election

Seriously please a new leader or I’m not voting

  4. More and more this is feeling like Trudeau’s last few months as PM. Eby’s caucus is seemingly turning on him and hes left with a very, very unpopular policy that he needs to repeal but cant. Theres just no good way forward for him. I would be very surprised if Eby is still premier by the time the next election rolls around and unfortunately be even more surprised if the NDP wins that election
