It takes 46 hours. There’s no bathroom. There are alternate hen parties and stag dos coming on every stop. The seat reservations switch every 45 minutes. The refreshment cart takes only exact change, no notes. It is 350 degrees Fahrenheit. It is a rail replacement bus service.

So sad they got rid of it, I really wanted to spend 13+ hours on a CrossCountry train.

  3. I used to regularly use that train at one point. Not the whole length, but still from the south-west up to Fife, or back.

Worst journey was being stuck in the smoking carriage (which dates me I know).

  4. Longest route ever? Surely you can just go from Bristol to London, bounce around the underground for a few hours, and then zigzag all the way up to to Aberdeen?

Edit: ah, longest direct route, I’m tired, sorry.

What’s Cheltenham Spa done to deserve special highlighting on the map here? You from there OP?

My parents were on this train for the last ride. They were tourists (going from Edinburgh to Leeds I think) and had no idea it was a special occasion until they met all the excited train enthusiasts riding with them.

Took it once from Edinburgh to Penzance – think it was 10 hours or something. It was incredibly cheap and the people watching was fascinating (the comment above about hen parties is spot on.

    Would never do it again.

interestingly, you can drive from near Perth (30 miles or so from Dundee) all the way to Torquay (30 miles or so from Plymouth) without seeing a junction.
„At the next junction, just go straight on…..“
