    Pay-walled.

But I will say. Dumb take if that is the take.

We have a cost of living crisis in Canada. And like it or not unless you are in downtown Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver there is no public transport available for you and you need a car.

I am all pro electrification and making gas less appealing but not at the cost of living standards for millions of Canadians.

The idea of gas taxes and industrial carbon pricing is to try to bring the cost in line with the harms in order to disincentivize carbon-intensive activities relative to viable alternatives. The current geopolitical circumstances are doing that nicely on their own already.

  3. The only non-populist explanation I can come up with is that this may boost the summer tourism industry.

Otherwise I consider it one of the worst ways to provide economic relief to those who need it most.

  4. I really don’t follow the logic of voluntary giving up revenue sources when we are making cuts to deal with the deficit.

With poll numbers what they are and the lukewarm reception this Poilievre idea received there isn’t really a political reason to do this. All Carney seems to be doing is setting Liberals up for a bad day when the tax comes back and we see gas prices go up overnight. (unless the intent is to never bring it back, which seems unwise fiscally)

It really seems like whatever Carney does something, the next hour there is some conservative opinion piece about how he should have done the exact opposite.

The comments on this thread do not get it. Regardless of where you live in this great country of ours food and goods need to get to places where it can be bought and that is not happening on public transit. Trains, Ferries and Trucks move those items to warehouses and stores. This gas tax cut affects those costs and keeps costs down for everyone including those who take buses, walk, cycle and drive electric vehicles. This is a smart anti inflationary play.

  7. We are hurtling into the depths of a climate crisis and Carney decided to reinforce our dependancies on oil and gas at a time when we should be offering green energy/sustainability programs across the country.

Welp paywall. Carney should internalize how the ex-carbon tax, while a sensible policy in a world of perfectly rational actors, is a straight shot out of power. Canadians are emotionally attached to their gas-dependent lifestyle.

Politically, Carney is trying to stay ahead of the game by manipulating costs. Good for him, but we’re headed for ecological doom so yay.

Even though I don’t like MPs jumping the ship.. I welcome the gas taxes. This is what people would have voted n wanted from a conservative gov.. they are getting it.
If I can’t afford higher gas prices how will I afford a electric car..
Tax cuts, welcome and thank you!

That’s not mu issue. Fine that he cut the 10c or whatever tax it was, but they should have legislated that gas companies can’t just lower the price by 10 cents, then raise it 10 cents the next day. Unless they did.

We saw it in B.C. with the removal of the carbon tax, gas prices went down that amount then went straight back up. Only putting profits into the gas companies.
