If the opposition had more redeeming qualities there wouldn’t be any incentive to cross the floor.

  2. Our system of government is that we vote for MPs, not parties..

    It’s literally working as designed.

It’s the partisanship that undermines our system.. MPs voting against the interest of their riding to follow party lines..

The Party Whip is more damaging to our Democracy and Government than Floor Crossing… Why even have a vote? Just give all of the leaders the proxy votes for their MPs and then just have the leaders vote their Party position since everybody is expected to vote the party line, why waste time and money pretending their personal views matter?

If floor crossing is bad but the options are Vote along party lines regardless if you think the legislation is good, break rank and kill your career and political aspiration even if you’re representing your constituents or join the party so that you’re getting Whipped to vote for things you’d like to vote for anyways… I can see why there is an issue with floor crossing. PP could end Floor Crossing in a heartbeat if he suspended the Party Whip.

Never in the history of the westminster system has a majority been obtained via floorcrossing. The „YoU vOtE for ThE MP, noT the PaRtY“ crowd needs to understand why people are condemning this.

I don’t like PP, but I’d rather the liberals be kept in check with a minority government.

  5. The opinion piece is babbling junk, lots of words and doesn’t say anything of value.

    Anyway,

If MPs can leave a party without triggering a bi-election, then switching parties should not trigger one either.

look at all the downvotes and the comments in this thread. it’s very clear that there is some interference and brigading happening… no matter what you think about the floor crossings it cannot be denied that some Canadians feel it’s destabilized their confidence in the electoral system.

dispute it or not from your point of view or opinion, there are a large percentage of Canadians and even liberal supporters that don’t agree with how this shook out.

It would be interesting to poll people and see if they could remember the name of the person they voted for in the last Federal election.

I remember a time in the early 2000s when a bunch of Canadian Alliance and PC MPs crossed the floor to a party that didn’t even exist at the previous election. Was our system of government undermined then?

As a person on the right, I kinda feel sorry for the ndp, had their member not crossed, they would hold the balance of power in their hand.

On this scale is called an “outlier event”. So what else is an “outlier”? Probably blowing 20 point lead or whatever and then not stepping down.

  11. PP blew an election he had in the bag and then rigged a leadership review so he couldn’t lose.
Few MPs are over his leadership and want to live to Carney who has shown he is right of center.

Don’t think that is a blown democracy.

If the Conservatives are going to embrace the batshit crazy fringe to get their numbers up in their Big Tent, and not come up with any decent plans to address the problems this nation is facing, and their leadership is issuing “prove your worth” emails, they sound pretty messed up. It’s no wonder MPs are bailing. If they were any kind of a serious party, they’d have principles and people would stay. I’d call these extraordinary times.

  13. Would be hilarious if the new Liberals are secretly trying to take down the party.

  14. Maybe we should change our government from a first past the post to ANY OTHER system that better represents us.

What does it say about the character of these MP’s that were initially brought in to the those parties that it was that easy to jump ship?

  16. For those complaining about the floor crossing, I would LOVE for them to quote Harper’s statement made in the HOUSE OF COMMONS on this issue. I would LOVE for these complainers to tell us which politicians voted against making changes regarding crossing the floor.

Wanna talk about what undermines our system of governance? Bernard Drainville nearly became PM of Quebec. That shit where a sitting PM leaves and no election is called and the party can just elect the next PM themselves, and that PM can never have been elected, it’s fine when it’s a dude like Carney, not fine when it’s a lunatic like Drainville. The people need protection against the lunatic kind therefore no one should be allowed to be PM unelected. Period.

“The only people that seem to be complaining about floor crossing are those who are not receiving the floor crossers.”
    ~ Stephen Harper

  19. These floor crossings from the Conservatives likely say more about Pierre Poilievre’s leadership than anything else.

  20. FiRe_McFiReSomeDay on

Boo f’n hoo. The CPC doubled down and re-selected Poilievre in their closed-door pay-to-vote leadership-review. They are getting exactly what they asked for.

  21. CrackerJackJack on

Floor crossing literally makes your vote meaningless. The people voted aligned with an opinion or party and then that MP can just one-day say ‚meh, I’m bored let’s change things up‘ which makes the vote worthless.
