Facebook and Instagram Tighten Censorship Rules for Saying “Antifa”

    1. Particularly concerning issues:

      >This spring, Meta quietly revised its Community Standards policy, an internal company document dictating what its billions of global users can and cannot say online. The latest tweaks can be found in a chapter on “Violence and Incitement,” where a subsection titled “Other Violence” spells out, among other rules, the company’s bans on ads for assassins. It’s in this subsection where Meta last month published a revision to include new limitations for users who mention antifascism.
      >
      >Policy documents reviewed by The Intercept show the company now treats any “Content that includes the word ‘antifa’ as a potential rules violation if that word appears along with what Meta deems a “content-level threat signal” — meaning a statement that the company believes implies violence.
      >
      >In some cases, the content that Meta considers a threat signal is commonsensical. If, for instance, a user mentions bringing a weapon to an event, the company flags it as a threat signal. But in other cases, Meta’s process for identifying threat signals is more vague. Under the new rules, Meta might trigger a threat signal when a user posts a “visual depiction of a weapon,” a “reference to arson, theft, or vandalism,” or “military language,” if accompanied by the word “antifa.”
      >
      >If “antifa” is mentioned in the context of “references to historical or recent incidents of violence” — a category so sprawling that it includes “historic wars” and “battles” — that post will also be penalized. Should Meta apply this rule as written, the company could, for instance, restrict posts comparing the antifascist nature of World War II to the contemporary antifa movement.

      >Asked about the new restrictions on the word “antifa,” Meta spokesperson Erica Sackin pointed to a March transparency report that noted the company would “remove QAnon and Antifa content when combined with content-level threat signals.” The report does not explain what those signals are. Meta did not respond when asked if the company had discussed its antifa speech rules with the Trump administration.

      >Prior reporting by The Intercept has shown Meta historically hews closely to federal terrorism labels. Meta in 2020 announced it would tackle the leftist bogeyman under its “Movements and Organizations Tied to Violence” policy alongside QAnon, the right-wing mass delusion that helped foment the January 6 effort to overturn the results of the presidential election by force. Though self-identified antifa adherents have taken part in acts of property damage during protests, analyses repeatedly show that left-wing violence in the United States is a relatively small and rare threat compared to right-wing extremist groups and militias.

It’s pretty clear that combined with the end of E2EE DMs in chat services like Instagram DMs that Meta is much more interested in the speech that the public engages in on their platforms, both public and private. And it’s been clear for a very long time that free speech on private social media platforms does not exist. For those who are concerned for their privacy and personal data, it would be a good time to search for alternatives.

    2. Explain to me like I’m 12, what’s so bad about an Anti-Fascist and Anti-Racist Political group?

    3. Business-Toad on

Do they think anyone but Republicans actually use the phrase „Antifa“ seriously?

    4. I’ve never in my life seen the word antifa written anywhere unless it was BY a far-right troll using it as a hyperbolic pejorative against anyone to the left of Mussolini.

Struggling to wrap my head around the negative use for this. Kneejerk reaction is it’s Facebook, so it’s something bad, but wouldn’t this just target people making threats against Antifa or using Antifa as a scapegoat for their violent rhetoric?

I’ve never even heard of someone other than a fearmonger use the term antifa…

    6. TuckerCarlsonsOhface on

My after school club is just called the anti-fascists, so this doesn’t affect me.

Why do people use Zuckerberg’s platforms? He’s a fucking psycho

    8. I hope Dems tear Meta apart when they get back in power, but my guess is that Zuck and Meta will suddenly start acting like liberals once that happens. They’re opportunists.

    9. Powerful_Resident_48 on

How does that make any sense? A person is either antifascist or fascist. There is literally nothing in between the two.

And they wonder WHY I dropped these apps. And who says “ANTIFA” anyways?

    11. But you can say nazis were right and they should have finished the job and they will let you be. Meta is a joke. Zuckerberg is crashing his empire to the ground at high speed.

    12. The business elite always side with the fascists. Just like during the rise of Mussolini. Just like during the rise of Franco. Just like during the rise of Hitler.

      Capitalists love fascism

      Antifa = bad

Promoted AI Slop and accounts using stolen content = good.

      Got it.

    14. They’re actually so fucking stupid lmfao nobody but the Republicans say this.

    15. Surely this is going to mostly hit the pearl clutching type with the fascist leanings who are obsessed with the dangerous antifa out there I can’t believe the people actually against fascism self refer with that name?

    16. Might as well ban people for saying socialism. Antifa is a movement and ideology, it’s not a hate group or organization. There may be antifa folk out there that **are** hateful and part of a larger organization, but a rectangle is not a square.

    17. Lol the fact the word Antifa stands for „Anti Fascist“ tells you absolutely everything you need to know, about the people and the institutions who are making these decisions

The other day, I was scrolling through videos on Facebook; mostly it was just random arts and crafts, but I scrolled past one where it was just a guy putting a rat in the cage, then putting that cage underwater and filming the rat drown.

Literally, that’s all it was, a rat drowning and then dying. Pretty clear animal cruelty, lots of Chinese comments.

So I reported that video. A week later, Facebook notified me that the video didn’t break any rules and wouldn’t be taken down.

So drowning animals is ok, but ANTIFA is where the line is drawn?

Meta is an enemy of the American people…

We need a *massive* correction in what this nation is supposed to be and supposed to serve.

They think we exist to funnel cash and power into their pockets.

    20. The amount of times I have reported people with literal nazi propaganda and been told they havent violated the rules is insane

    21. Antifa didn’t try to overthrow our government…that was Trump & MAGA.

      * I’m sure they’ll fix this simple case of mistaken identity & ban the mention of those two instead.

    22. Pavement-69 on

Sounds like conservatives can drop antifa in a thread any time they want it taken down.

    23. Sweaty_Marzipan4274 on

      I got a reddit ban for jokingly saying I was a member of #tifa Local 69 😆
