    1. and why?
they are undocumented for a reason….many come with shady backgrounds…
it aint to boost fabrics of society for Spain…the country got their own issues , now another burden

Youth unemployment in Spain is already at almost 25%. Spain should address that before introducing even more competition to a job market that alredy has far more workers than it can absorb.

It’s admirable to want to help, but this is a „secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others“ situation.

    3. These people are already scraping by with non contributing jobs. Wouldn’t it be better if they could get a proper job with working rights and contribute to the economy?

Even if some end up leeching off social benefits I imagine it’d be a net positive for the economy

Lmao, enjoy the mess Spaniards, we’ll see if you guys will still act so cocky in a decade

    5. The first world citizens don’t like having babies anymore and nearly all developed countries population are in decline.

Instead of making life affordable, the government hand out citizenship to “import” people to bump up population and the imported population are more likely to have babies.

Spain is going to drown itself in suicidal sympathy. Logically you only help others when you can handle your matters well, otherwise that short term „heroic“ effort wont last long but drag a large group of innocent people down with it.

Spain fast-tracking for a far-right government in the future. Great job guys

    8. Something tells me Spain won’t be meeting the NATO 5% requirement anytime soon

Sending my congratulations to all the liberals in Spain. You’re going to love incentivizing more illegal migration.

      >The government’s plan will offer a one-year, renewable residence permit to undocumented migrants. In order to be eligible, applicants must prove that they have already spent five months living in Spain and have a clean criminal record.

For everyone who doesn’t want to read. Which part of this is objectionable?

What a lot of the comments miss is that a great many of these people are from Latin America – and that is why Spain (and to an extent Italy) buck the European trend of mass immigration costing more than it generates in most of Europe.

The immigration into Spain has a different balance and hence the debate about it is different.

Latin American immigration into Southern Europe is relatively successful.

And then those people won’t find jobs in Spain and flood into the rest of Europe because now they can travel freely.

It’s baffling how a huge majority take for granted these people will join the workforce🤦

I’m shocked that the majority of the comment section seems to agree this is a bad thing (myself included), yet Reddit is so left leaning and overall very against republican anti immigration policies in the US.

hey England how’d that turn out for you when you did it?

hey every country in Europe that has done the same….. how bout you?

people don’t want to offend others or be accused of being racist because that’s what you are if you don’t welcome immigrants in abundance then watch as instead of assimilating into your society they socially engineer whatever area they move into to be like the homeland they ran or escaped from. taking advantage of the 1st world guilt..

remember undocumented means they have no means of proving who they are, who they were, what crimes they might have done and been incarcerated for, what fringe or even terrorist groups they might support, or even what law they live by…

If you want immigrants, which is a good thing, lower the bar for legal immigrants who meet the basic qualifications, including in terms of value, job skills, education, etc.

Why reward/incentivize illegal immigrants who’s only qualiifcation is a willingness to break the law to get to your country?

    17. 500000? It is estimated that Spain has received more than one million immigrants in the last two years. The government says 500,000, but there is no limit.

    18. Familiar-Weather5196 on

This is crazy. I’m left leaning, but this is stupid and honestly disrespectful to the rest of the European Union, since most of these people won’t even stay in Spain

    19. At this point the EU really needs to re-evaluate their open border policies, the Labour market is already overflowing in many countries and especially in Spain, and youth unemployment is especially high, I really do not see how bringing in 500K mostly low-skilled migrants to compete for the same jobs will help.

Reddit loves this because it tickles their virtue while they don’t experience any of the consequences.

This is pure insanity by a leftist government which will have an impact on Europe as a whole. They automatically have Schengen access and will be able to move freely.
