    1. „The suspension will come into effect on April 20 and last until Sept. 7, and it comes as global oil prices remain volatile amid US-Iran tensions.

According to the federal government, the tax suspension is expected to reduce the cost of gas by 10 cents per litre on regular gas, and four cents on diesel.“

So dumb the companies can make record profits but the government has to remove taxes. Time for a windfall tax

    3. chewwydraper on

At the cost of which services while gas companies still get to make crazy profit?

One of the most frustrating things about Canada is our addiction to these temporary fixes. Tax credits, tax holidays, etc. It always masks a much more profound issue that no one is willing to fix.

This is the time for Carney to spend significant political capital on a full overhaul of our tax system to boost our abysmal competitiveness. Instead we get a “temporary tax suspension” that will be pocketed by oil companies. We need to do better.

    5. 10c savings at the pump until gas companies raise the price by 10c. Just like when the carbon tax was lifted.

Yay, we get a 2 day reprieve before the corporate fuckers just put the price back up and double up on that profit margin for the same cost to me, the consumer.

      Fuckin‘ rigged system, man…

    7. What i found interesting is carney sort of blasted the trudeau carbon tax in his speech..said it was divisive and didnt work well and that by getting rid of it reduced costs

Like a year ago this be seen as tory misinformation lol

    8. This is 100% theatre, so the government can say they’re helping, without actually doing the hard work to actually help people.

Gas prices will go down for a week, then come right back up. Same thing that happened with the carbon tax cut.

Then we’ll have to pay even more once the tax is reinstated.

I don’t get all the snide comments. I appreciate having to pay a little less at the pump next week

    11. Gonna collect some downvotes here, but this is a brutal move. The gas companies will just raise the prices to cover the tax, then blame the government tax coming back into effect when they raise them again in September.

If Canada is pursuing austerity, cutting services and firing government workers, that means we need more tax dollars, not less.

This is going to hurt the government’s pocketbook a lot and help the average consumer barely at all.

Glad to see Carney listening to the Conservatives on this one and making it clear he wants to work collaboratively even with his new majority. It’s going to take all of us united to get through these difficult times brought on by wars around the world and isolationism and aggression south of us.

    13. Keep the tax imo. Use additional revenues to go towards moving us away from our dependence on oil and gas. Get that national grid backed by sustainable energy on the go NOW so we can electrify everything.

    14. Half of the replies here are stating that this is a dumb measure and it won’t work while the other half are saying this is PP’s idea and the libs stole another genius conservative initiative.

Im gonna guess this isn’t gonna affect Quebec much as we already pay out our ass as they refuse to take off the emissions/carbon tax on it that was axed by the other provinces.

    16. ComfortableLetter989 on

10 cents a litre. Who gives a flying F. The provinces need to also remove their tax. Alberta, Ontario, BC, Quebec… drop them 100% now so we can afford to drive

Gas just went up 10c over night where I am, 187.99$. So this means it will go back down right? Right?!?
