Well we must have 300 amazingly run councils. Apparently the highest paid is at Staffordshire Council.

God that is a staggering amount to be in 1% of earners. Will need to see if I can find more info about their job titles.

This is basically rage bait.

“More than the PM” sounds outrageous, but it strips out all context to get clicks. The reality is far more boring. These salaries aren’t set in isolation, they’re pulled up by the private sector.

If you want people capable of running complex services and managing huge budgets, you have to compete with what those same people can earn elsewhere. That’s all this is. Market rates showing up in the public sector.

Frame it properly and it’s not shocking at all. It’s just how hiring works.

„Workers“ is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. The headline is politically motivated to imply front line staff, none of whom see anything like that. It’s some council leaders and directors, of whom I’d bet quite a few are contractors filling the position temporarily until there is permanent recruitment, and consultants always cost more than permanent staff. 

Not a problem if a lot of the councils weren’t bankrupt with the ones that aren’t raising tax left right and centre whilst providing awful service.

The PM is paid like shit for the job he does and the responsibilities he has.

For context the majority of these „council workers“ are directors and chief executives on bodies with a revenue of over £1 billion and a five figure number of employees 

If you cut these „workers“ pay in half you would save £20m or so nationwide. This would allow you to improve the roads in a single shire county. Except it wouldn’t.

Because older persons care is all consuming it would last a year before the cost of care and increasingly old population who we are keeping alive through more illness (which isnt cheap) than before swallows it up. For the single council that had nice roads for a year. 

Paying chief execs a lot less than market rate rather than going all in and giving them middle management pay is a drop in the bucket. If you want pot holes fixed either the local government funding situation needs to be fixed or you need to give authorities ring fenced funding for it.  Same with stuff like bin collections.

This sort of reductive analysis is so stupid. An NHS Chief Exec for a territorial board in Scotland earns about £150k, they are personally accountable for performance, constantly slandered in the press for things outside their control and on top of that lead a hugely complex organisation with 15,000 workers. And you bet that when they’re on holiday they are still working because the pressure is enormous.

not to defend council largesse but how can you make a comparison like for like with a standard PAYE salary? The PM gets rent free accommodation, £30K residential upgrade allowance, heavily subsidised food and drink in the HoC, transportation, staff, security, 5 star accomodation on diplomatic visits and a whopping great pension when they finish (even the lettuce got it)..

The PM should be paid more.

As for council, the high salaries are overwhelmingly the council chief officers (or equivalent), who control a budget and number of staff comparable to large businesses. Their role – and thus their pay – is broadly along the lines of a CEO of a large corporation.
