Actually quite impressive, considering the war was at a standstill for a long time.

  4. How did France’s performance drop off so much that Germany only advanced a few dozen kilometers versus WWII?

What was going on in the donbas region? It was not yet part of Ukraine, so it had a german governor or what?

  6. Without context you can see where the ’stab in the back‘ myth came from, on paper Germany looks like it’s doing great. But the German Army was collapsing, already spent after the failure of the Spring Offensive, and now being hammered by the Entente’s Hundred Days Offensive. The economy was crippled, with widespread food shortages verging on famine, and Spanish Influenza tearing through the malnourished population. All this whilst the American entry into the war gave the Entente massively increased economic and manufacturing resources and effectively unlimited manpower. There wasn’t any way out from here, continuing to prosecute the war would have been 1945 levels of suicidal.

I recently finished Dreadnought and Castle of Steel and have come to the conclusion that if, by its own actions, Germany hadn’t pulled the US into WW1, they’d have been in a good position to negotiate at this point.
