Hugely embarrassing retreat here, but not nearly as embarrassing as blowing up your own government for an elective confidence vote.

I don’t think it’s ever a great idea to try and pressure your own team with confidence, but it’s insane to do so for the „principle“ of suspending, but not cancelling, DRIPA. That would have been a crazy election.

  2. I guess we have the answer as to whether Eby had the votes needed to pass this motion. Regardless, this is just delaying the inevitable, this directionless government is not going to survive the full length of it’s term.

  3. I think the suspension vote is going to fail.

Then the Eby NDP is likely going to table a full repeal to force the BC Conservatives to vote for it.

That’ll likely take the repeal DRIPA steam away from the BCCP and then Eby will likely call an election in the fall because they’ll be unable to govern with such a divided caucus. It’ll also be an opportunity to purge their caucus of members that don’t toe the party line.

The DRIPA Repeal would be a similar strategy to what Carney did with the Carbon Tax repeal.

I think everyone knows DRIPA is done. It has no place in B.C. and the NDP probably know it’s not a hill worth losing their government on.

Threatening your own caucus with confidence, and the ensuing election that would follow, and then backing down once you realize the caucus isn’t going to fully support you is a massive blow to your credibility both with caucus and the broader electorate. Yes, at the very least Eby remains premier and gets to fight another day, but he’s in a much weaker position than he was before. I would not be surprised if he steps down before the next election now.
