No it wasn’t. Impeachment Conviction were written for President doing stuff that is considered extremely dangerous but still able to contest being unfit. The 25th was written for stuff that incapacitates a president so we have a way to pass the permissions and powers to the VP while the president is still technically alive.

So was the 2nd. And that isn’t a threat of violence, that is just a fact. If the second amendment applies to anyone, it applies to a corrupt and lawless tyrant, attacking america from within at the service of foreign enemies. This is what every oath in government means when they say threats „foreign and domestic“. Trump is the enemy that the founders feared most. This is the enemy Lincoln talked about when he said the US could never be defeated militarily but only through suicide. This is the moment and we have failed the test, utterly, that history tried to prepare us for.

I think the challenge is that Trump appointments for his cabinet focus so much on loyalty over competence that seems unlikely to ever happen unless he has a big Mac induced stroke that leaves him so incoherent that even Stephen Miller thinks it borders on Weekend at Bernie’s to pretend he is still capable of leading. The 25th amendment has a dispute resolution that has a higher threshold in Congress than impeachment so don’t really see it happening. I’m not entirely sure Vance would be a meaningful improvement although at least he seems to not shift his thinking at the drop of a hat.

    4. No it wasn’t. It was written with JFK in mind. That’s why it was proposed and enacted in the wake of his death.

No, it really wasn’t. It was made for a president having surgery or others wise unconscious.

It’s too messy of a process to be rid of a mad man that also controls Congress and the courts.

No, it wasn’t. Everyone needs to stop with this 25th amendment fantasy. It was made for a President who ends up comatose or incapacitated, not for a megalomaniac Alzheimer’s patient with a temper and persecution complex.

Stop with the 25th amendment nonsense.

    7. Mind_Killer on

Doesn’t matter unless you write an amendment for the Congress cucks who’ve surrendered all their power to him.

    8. J-the-Kidder on

Not exactly. It was written with a non complicit Congress in mind. It was written with a Congress in mind that would not give away it’s power to a wannabe dictator. Instead, we’re at this point solely because of the complicit cowards of the Republican party. Nothing else. Full stop.

    9. Except that it was not. I would encourage anyone that thinks the 25th Amendment is a realistic mechanism to remove Trump from office to actually read it. Specifically section 4. The Vice President and Cabinet can declare him incompetent and inform Congress, but all Trump would need to do at that point is send a letter to the President pro tempore and Speaker declaring his capacity to serve. And „Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue… by two-thirds vote of both Houses“.

    10. They could enact the 25th amendment and Trump could undue it with a message saying he’s fine. Article 2, section 4 is the one that removes the entire cabinet.

    11. The electoral college was written with trump in mind. The people elect a moron and the electoral college says no.

Time to start putting pressure on the politicians supporting him still

He’ll be insulated until they start caving

What are the arguments against the statement of the former Director of the CIA? – Would be very interested in hearing them.

    14. Yeah, but they also had a functional Congress in mind to carry it through.

Plenty of people have already noted the problems with this, but I’m just enjoying the idea of this headline being literally true. Like in 1967 Congress was like “You know what, Fred Trump’s son seems like a real piece of shit. Spoiled narcissist probably thinks he should be president or something. We’d better figure out an additional way to kick him out just in case that ever happens, because fuck that guy.”

    16. thegoatmenace on

I mean this is kind of an ahistorical take. The amendment was created after the Kennedy assassination when they realized they didn’t know how to handle a president becoming incapacitated. It wasn’t actually designed as a work around for impeachment, even though it technically could be used in that way. The purpose of it is to have a way to get rid of the president if they become physically incapable of doing their job due to some unforeseen circumstances.

    17. We have all the tools necessary to remove Trump from office. We don’t need the 25th Amendment. There’s a much more direct remedy. Impeachment and removal. The problem is, congress has put party over country and will let us all die in a nuclear escalation before they’ll take action on someone from their own party.

    18. Basic_Yam_715 on

Too bad Congress is bought and paid for… Those fuckers will burn the country to the ground as long as they get their cut.

All of our Constitutional guard rails were put up for someone exactly like Trump. It’s like it was literally written to protect us from Trump.

    20. Humble-Translator-88 on

Yeah, it was also written with a country that has a higher standard for who runs it in mind.

    21. comrade_leviathan on

I can’t possibly see how it was… if the trigger event has to come from the Cabinet, what on Earth would make someone think that the Cabinet installed by an aspiring autocrat would suddenly turn on him?

    22. squeakysquirrel54 on

I think we should put in another amendment saying the oldest someone can be president or even in Congress is 55 and they make minimum wage since they do the absolute minimum for the American people!

    23. ikilledtupac on

You couldn’t even get court ordered guardianship over him now, much less impeach him without an act of congress.

This is all a ruse to get people to spend their time and energy pursuing something useless.

    24. Half of the Constitution was written with tyrannical pieces of shit in mind, but tyrannical pieces of shit don’t care about the law, and Americans turned out to be too timid to do anything effective about it, so the betrayers have all of the advantages regardless of what some old documents say.

Perhaps some of the legal entities that are established after the fall of America will have the sense to keep their policy makers under very tight lock and key, and to punish all dishonesty with extreme prejudice. Otherwise, they’ll fail as well, and probably a lot faster now that the folks who were born as Americans have demonstrated how passive they are.
