Can people on here really not see this is about more than the price of diesel.
I’ve seen more negativity towards the protest here than anywhere. firstly I know it’s a nightmare it’s not fun for me either, I’m not a farmer or contractor I don’t get concessions on my fuel but I fully support what they are trying to do. it is a mess yes and I don’t want any ill person to suffer but I do want change and that’s the sentiment people seem to be missing, the fuel hikes (and yes I know it’s due to the war) somehow became the straw that broke the camels back.
our electricity prices are the highest in europe. fuel is massively taxed to the point in which it is extortionate. price gouging is evident in everything from the four courts to private insurance while many institutions like the banks turn over record profits.
as an ordinary person I for the last few years have felt so hopeless as to literally be suicidal because no matter what I do I can’t get ahead I can’t afford to buy or build a house for my family no matter how much I work, I’m trapped sinking higher and higher amounts into rent. dead money which will never help me in the long run.
I struggle to keep up with my shopping and bills, despite me regularly working overtime and my partner having gone back to work now too, which I might add was a necessity more than a choice, and we are still fucking struggling the whole time.
it’s too much, I heard someone say on the radio recently “ life is supposed to be fun“ and it hit home for me because it really isn’t.
I say all this to say, how I feel is incredibly common and is a huge part of why this protest has escalated into the mess we have today. when I heard it started I was delighted, It was the first sense of hope I felt in a long time, as naive as I know that is. it’s more than fuel it’s people saying „fuck this, you must take notice that we can’t go on like this“
I know this post will probably get down voted to oblivion but I just wanted to say my part because I hate that we are here but I really really fucking hope it works and things change.

Wish it was finished. I can see the average Joe getting screwed over. Let’s see if these cuts will do anything for people driving to work, not just cuts on diesel for hauliers and farmers.

I really don’t see how this can carry on more than a week or so—at the rate we’re going, every forecourt in the country is going to be dry before long, and commutes are going to be even more hellish next week when the schools start back up. And now the guards are gearing up in full force all over the country this weekend. It’s starting to feel like it’s just a question of who blinks first at this point.
If there’s any consolation I can offer people at this point, it’s that one way or another, this will all be done sooner rather than later.

Well these machines can be moved with a bit of force.
And every other sort of far-right head banger from Phil Dwyer to Gavin Pepper to Derek Blighe now all over this like a fly in shite.

I think we all support the right to peaceful protest, but this went past peaceful protesters a couple days ago. At this point it’s domestic terrorism shutting down the country leading to risk of life. Fully support sending in the army to support the gardai forcibly remove these vehicles and make arrests.

The protest needs to stop immediately.
They will try to pull this stunt every time they get annoyed about anything

I’m presuming that if the situation doesn’t improve , supermarket shelves will start to go empty as the delivery trucks don’t have any fuel? I haven’t heard anyone mention that yet but god I hope I’m wrong or missed something.

Any word from schools , preschools , creches , colleges if they will have to close , if staff don’t have enough fuel?

There is a complete misunderstanding of this situation. The general public don’t give a hoot about fuel policy or what someone posts on facebook. Trying to paint it black and white will do the government no favours.
If they could have gotten them out on Tuesday it would be over, but they have leverage and enough support to keep them going this long. They need to look at that situation for what it is and stop wasting time trying to police the morality of the far right.

I don’t blame the general public thinking the protesters are there for the good of the whole country but I don’t think they are. I think they’ll get an agreement that will benefit the farmers only and the rest of us will be soon forgotten about. The price of fuel will continue to rise due to the invasion of Iran and there’s nothing we can do about it. We’re no different to any other country

Government should do the following: 1) Announce the assistance package early next week, regardless of what the protestors do. 2) With schools back and the disruption caused there’d be heighten pressure on the protestors to disband. The government can point to the assistance package. 3) For those that haven’t disbanded (probably still a significant %) then it’s time for the Gardaí to forcibly remove anyone blocking critical infrastructure.

Anyone who thinks this lot are genuinely acting for the good of the general population is at best woefully naive. They don’t care about anyone but themselves.
This is no longer a peaceful protest, it’s a blockade and it can’t be allowed to continue.

I think most ordinary people could, and many have, get behind the *idea* of these protests. Prices are crippling high and the Government have it within their gift to reduce them.
I can also understand why the Government might not want to, but that’s a different story.
What’s perhaps the scariest issue here is how a legitimate protest, over a legitimate issue, has been well and truly highjacked by Ireland’s minuscule, but vocal, far-right.
We’re going to see more and more of this happening, and undermining legitimate issues.. all allowing those in power to dismiss and ignore them. It’s a very negative development.

Protesting is a right and we need to protect it but when one persons protest starts negatively impacting innocent and uninvolved people, it’s not a simple protest anymore.
People can’t get to work, kids can’t get to school, supermarkets running out of food, businesses unable to open and soon enough, emergency and critical infrastructure unable to function. This is not a protest anymore. This is holding the Irish people hostage to make the government act and it’s not right

These mega threads have been a whirlwind. Most comments are in lockstep with the Government, some of them are actually using the exact sound bites and rhetoric being put out on the radio and TV.
I support Mary Lou McDonald’s statement yesterday – the Government has made this protest worse and needs to meet with the protest groups, and then provide a substantial package that will have a real impact.
It beggars belief to see a community that can’t stop hating on FFFG snap into action and support them when they get under the slightest of pressure or see something outside of the realm of normal political business.
The protest has nasty elements, of course. Anybody who was at the water charges protests back then understands how popular movements work – and who will show up.
Be under no illusions, outside of this Reddit bubble large numbers of people across a wide range of political views are supporting this.
Dublin_Kopite82 on
Give a 24 hour notice that anyone blocking critical infrastructure will be arrested, including entry points to motorways.
Arrest every single protester that is still in place at that point.
Seize every tractor or lorry that is in the way, even though it will be slow process, start with most important infrastructure that needs unblocking.
Sell all the seized assets.
