On PR. This sits somewhat in the middle of G7 then, if adjusting for PPP average salary and looking at it as a % thereof. Above Germany and Canada which are somewhat unusually cheap, and below US and UK which are highway robberies.
I wish they had at least made it a gradual increase to 100k first to see.
Especially as the article shows the government would be making a 80k profit per PR application, not taking into account the rejected ones (even so, it won’t be 5:1) which still incur a labor cost as it’s free for the applicant.
I know Reddit doesn’t do nuance and I’ll probably get voted down but this is still sensible IMHO when considering politics and cost push inflation driving up their wage costs over time.
Before people whine about average Japan salary, the government drastically lowered the barriers to PR to attract highly skilled workers; that cohort will have a much higher median salary than Japanese peers.
It’s a steep increase no doubt, but the right to permanent residency ought not be cheap.
Edit: people will say this will cause people to move elsewhere. maybe. But the numbers will still rise drastically over the next 10 years, I bet. Even at 300k.

What about for those of us who have already applied with the old fee? Or is this “cough up, filthy gaijin!” moment gonna happen when I go to pick it up upon approval?

Sorry, I am a bit lost
I am on a PR that needs renewal in 2031
What am I expecting to be charged?
I had read before that PR extension will raise to 100k¥, is that still their Plan?
Thanks

It’s a proposed revision, not a revision.

It’s always funny to look at the Japanese comments on Threads or X regarding the permanent residence fees. So many think it should be 10x or 100x what is being proposed.
They are really delusional people if they think their permanent residency is worth that.
