Wild how the weak spot wasn’t the app itself, but the phone’s notifications. Most people never think about stuff like that until a story like this pops up.

      From the article:

Signal has a toggle that stops content from appearing in notifications. To enable this, open the app and head to Settings > Notifications > Notification Content, and then select either ‘No Name or Content’ for maximum privacy, or ‘No Content’ if you’re happy for the sender’s name to be retrievable.

I once read that if you just lock your phone with a 4-6 digit PIN, law enforcement can easily access your iPhone with their forensic tools. Also something to think about. Biometrics and complex passwords are your friend.

Edit: complex passwords seem to only be your friend. If you only use a 4-6 digit PIN, police can access your phone with their tools (GrayKey is one). It’s not a secret lol

Umm, I think I’m fine with the FBI seeing all my messages. Not sure if I really need to be worried about them getting stuff from my notifications.

edit: For people that don’t understand the OP title is about changing your phone settings. I’m not going to change my phone settings and I don’t think most people will. Are you going to change your phone settings?

    5. Android has similar settings but users should probably turn off Notification History too.

I mean, I’ve turned my notification history off on my android for other reasons but super handy to be semi protected from this as well

Once the notification is cleared why are these held and not deleted? If I can’t access the notification history then why keep it?

If you’re using Signal for privacy and the content of your messages shows up on the notification screen, you don’t know what you’re doing
