  1. Absolutely she should. Any argument in favor of floor crossing has a core argument that the MPs individuality is the driving force of our democracy. If gladu crosses the floor and is immediately neutered by the party whip how does that argument hold water?

Democracy is supposed to represent the will of the people. Absolutely none of this seems to be in line with the mandate passed by voters in the last election. It seems like our system allows the political class to do literally whatever they want which kind of defeats the whole purpose of democracy in my eyes.

I am glad there is at least one politician who has electoral reform as part of their platform because its pretty clearly needed at this point.

  2. While I’m fine with floor crossings at a theoretical level, it *really* stinks for all the volunteers and EDA people who work so hard to get their MP elected.

There are some unicorn cases where the EDA might support an MP flipping – with the formation of the Bloc Quebecois maybe being the biggest example – but they are certainly the exception.

Campaign work is, well, a lot of work. You give up your time after work, time with friends, family, and kids, and time on weekends to trudge door to door late into the evening, to phone bank, mind numbingly stick addresses stickers on packets and on and on.

Whether an MP crossing the floor „betrays“ their constituents I see as a case by case thing.

But I always really feel for the EDA people and the volunteers who put in all that time and effort, only to have the candidate they thought was as deeply committed as them flip and render all their effort moot.

Whether the crossing itself is above board or justified, the EDA and volunteers always have a right to be absolutely livid.

In a news conference at the convention she said it was a good move for her personally as well. I think her constituents are owed a further explanation on this comment

In Gladu’s case, I don’t believe she could survive a reelection campaign in this riding.

I also don’t believe that a women with her background could have won Sarnia’s Liberal riding association’s nomination.

I’m sure there are some constituents that are happy with what she did, but she essentially subverted the wishes of most of the Liberal and Conservative voters in her riding.

This is my riding, and I agree. I didn’t vote for her, and I’m happy-ish that the Liberals now have a majority (though I’m wary about what they’ll do with it), I think that my fellow constituents are right to feel scammed. People should get what they voted for. That said, I also want to get rid of FPTP, because the large percentage of people in a riding who disagree with the candidate should also be represented. Also, I take great issue with party whipping, because not every policy/law works well for each region; I don’t think an MP should have to screw their region because the party says so.

All the people who think „you vote for the candidate, not the party“, I think they’re just coping. The same sort of people who believe reddit saying „the downvote button isn’t a disagree button“. Yes it is; de facto, it is. That may not have been the intention, but here we are. Hardly anybody actually does votes for a candidate. Most people don’t know squat about their candidate, and it’s hard to expect somebody working 40+ hours a week to be informed. They vote for the party they support, because they expect that the candidate has been „vetted“, and aligns with their *general* belief system.

Sour grapes. The conservatives were always happy to accept floor crossers but now that people are leaving their party it is a tragedy

Floor crossing should result in an automatic by-election. Even though we have a parliament system and we elect MPs, not a party, the vast majority of people vote based on the federal party.

The MP should have the right to move if they feel like it. But the constituents should also have the right to either approve the MP’s actions or elect someone else.

Same conversation that happens every other time a floor crossing happens.

Bring it to a vote on the floor of the house.

Oh wait, that happened. And everyone voted against it. Including conservatives.

See y’all next time someone crosses the floor to do the same song and dance all over again. If recent history is anything to go by, that’ll be sooner rather than later.

This is how our system is designed. It works much, much better than the ridiculousness we have in the US.

You elect a person to Parliament, you don’t elect a party.
