Wasn’t the „dad shoes“ stigma only in North America, and New Balance was relatively trendy, or at least not mocked, in the rest of the world? New Balance has had interesting collaborations and limited-editions in Japan.

New Balance were seen as „dad shoes“ because they’re comfortable and functional, something Nike has not always prioritized with their endless stream of limited edition and collab releases. As a reformed sneaker collector, New Balance had long been considered one of the cooler alternatives to Nike.

They lost favor with young people in the US when their CEO endorsed Trump in 2016. New Balance has tried to distance itself from that endorsement ever since. People remember though.
