Were there any European settlements during this era trying to stake out their claims?

Fun fact, there’s a band from BC called 54-40. A name they took from this disputed claim.

In another world whats today Washington state could’ve been part of Canada. I’d imagine canada would be a lot more powerful and populated, since those areas would be the nicest in the country climate wise

This is why you will see a weird mix of geographical names on both sides of the border (ie the many of „Vancouver’s that exist“)

That’s wild. The Western Louisiana had a disputed “neutral ground” “Sabine Free State” from 1806 – 1821. I wonder if any truly adventurous souls lived in both.

The map shows most of what US and UK negotiators proposed in the 1818 treaty negotiations. A detached US port area in the Olympic Peninsula was also discussed.

I’ve always wondered how much more populated this area would be if it was Canada instead.

I’m really glad they settled on the boundary they did because it would make the borders look so weird with any of the other options.

Polk gave the British favorable terms because the US had just been invaded by Mexico, and he didn’t want to fight a war on both fronts.
The British used debt to coerce Mexico into starting the war, not caring what would happen to them.

And the the UK cowed and gave them all they wanted.
They should have split the territory at the Columbia river.

Huh, so the Oregon Territory bordered Mexico.
Under a different timeline in which Britain got their full claim south to the 42nd parallel and the Mexican-American War never happened (or Mexico won the war), Canada could have bordered Mexico.
