  1. I still want Pope Leo to issue a declaration that MAGA is anathema to the Catholic Church.

  2. TraditionalTackle1 on

Where I live all of the MAGA are generally evangelical Christians and they think Catholics are the devil and dont care what the pope thinks.

  3. MarcusQuintus on

Remember when the last pope said Trump isn’t a good choice, but neither was Harris?
    Yeah, fuck em.

  4. maybe-an-ai on

Popehat on Bluesky mentioned Vitandus for JD Vance which is excommunication with a side of shunning.

  5. Pentagon officials called the Vatican ambassador into a meeting, during which they essentially threatened the Pope with military force if he didn’t support the Trump administration. Even conservative Catholics are not going to like that (if they ever hear about it).

  6. smurfsundermybed on

Leo should invite him to sit down for a discussion.

    At the Weiner’s Circle.

  7. someguy7710 on

And to think with the first Catholic President (JFK) people were worried he would have some biased allegiance to the Pope. Now we have this.

  8. Problem is, most US Christians are Protestants. So they, by definition, don’t give a hoot about what the Pope thinks. Their faith makes them saved, not doing good works.

    From the article:

„A majority of them, 55 percent, voted for Trump, according to the Pew Research Center. White Catholics overwhelmingly backed Trump (62 percent against 37 percent who backed Kamala Harris), while a majority of Hispanic Catholics (58 percent) voted for the Democratic candidate“.

  10. UniversalSoldi3r on

Well it was a Pope who brought down the Iron Curtain. Maybe Leo can bring the curtain down on the pedos too.

  11. Eh, I’ll believe it when I see it on election day.

Christians can talk some shit about Trump but they’re still not voting for the other side. Not hating gay people is a bigger evil to them than say, destroying a civilization.

The title here is hilarious, Catholics back, checks notes, the leader of the Catholic Church

Just sayin, agreeing that attacking the holy see sounds a bit like

    > Canon 751 of the Code of Canon Law states that schism is “the refusal of submission to the supreme pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him.”

    And punishment?

    >
Canon 1364 stipulates that the penalty for this crime is excommunication “latae sententiae,” i.e., automatically upon the commission of the offense.

Sounds like a bunch of Catholics just self-excommunciated by standing by MAGA, putting the number backing Pope Leo at 100%.

All Catholics are Christians but not all Christian are Catholics. And not all Christians are real Christians.

I really hope Catholics walk away from this maga shit. If *ever* there was a false prophet, a walking embodiment of the 7 deadly sins, it’s Donald Trump.

  15. blackmobius on

Those same trump lovers will go back to him this election. They ignore how their politics directly contradicts the teachings of Christianity, and will continue to do so until the end of times.

Besides, most true blood maga are evangelical non catholics and have never cared about the pope anyways

  16. CountryGuy123 on

I’m sure it’s different in different areas of the country, but I really haven’t heard anything pro-Trump or MAGA at church (Catholic here)

  17. JustHereForMiatas on

Seems like the Catholics might’ve learned a thing or two from how things went for them the last time a fascist came into power.

  18. HealthyDisk4117 on

As a non-Catholic Pope Leo embodies the moral values I wish more Christians had. Meanwhile Trump and Vance are indiscrimanently killing men women and children. I don’t see what’s Christian about war and death.

  19. Catholics are definitely reactionary on queer issue and abortion, but in every other metric they’re usually liberal if not outright left leaning.

It’s a shame to see people like my mother get completely sucked into the evangelical political cult because my father (who’s way less religious ironically) was exposed to it growing up and carried the right wing ideology to her

  20. Whatever you do, don’t let JD got to the Vatican again. This is the Pope we NEED!

  21. My MAGA mom is catholic and she thinks the current Pope is an evil liberal who has illegitimately taken over the church. I know she’s not the only one.

  22. RaspberryCommie on

Your holiness, please. Please your benevolence.

    Excommunicate JD Vance.

  23. RetireWithRyan on

Yeah you fucked up when Nonna is no longer buying what Fox is selling.

  24. KapnKrumpin on

From the post, the percentage among white catholics is down from 59% to 52%. I kind of hate these newsweek posts, because I see like 2 a week and they are always similarly misleading. That loss is still a majority and probably not far off from the margin of error for such polls.

  25. stunneddisbelief on

Hmmm….maybe if your sole voting focus hadn’t been stripping other people of their rights (women, LGBTQIA+), things wouldn’t be this big of a circus?

  26. Humble-Translator-88 on

I’m not religious but if I was the Pope has 0 cases against him and is clearly not in the Epstein files while Trump…..hmmm. It should be an easy choice who is closer to God.

  27. Ornery-Ticket834 on

The only religious leader in the world who could possibly lose a popularity contest with Trump is possibly the Supreme Leader.

  28. I’m really curious to know how this has affected the conservative American Catholics who have been steaming about Leo’s wokeness. Which side are they coming down on?

  29. CelebrationFit8548 on

This should have been happening years ago instead of many being such sycophants to a *’child rapist’* as being exposed by The Epstein Files.

  30. vegasEd1313 on

News: A major world leader just threatened to whack the Pope.
MAGA: Those bastard Iranians. Threatening a holy man!
News: It was the Trump administration.
MAGA: Well Catholics aren’t really part of the Christian Nation.
