as per Quebec, the First Nation thing should shut down any attempt at separation as Alberta might find out they will be left with very little undisputed territory. Guarentee that the UN will side with the natives (possibly even send troops), leaving a separated Alberta in a very, very ugly position.

You can’t referendum your way out of treaties

Just let the referendum happen. It’s going to lose by a lot anyways, and denying people their voice is only going to help that movement grow.

Good job guys, I’ll stand behind any first Nations decision.

Alberta didn’t sign any treaties.

While I think the referendum is by and for idiots, I dont think treaties stand in the way here. Borders can be redrawn and are not immutable.
Getting everyone to agree on one is a different story.

While I am not for separation necessarily, I think that people have a right to express their opinions. First Nations people can vote for or against it. They should not have the power to veto the vote itself.
Let the Will of the people govern, and not be dictated by special interest groups.

The simplest way, in my mind, is to schedule a referendum in 15 days.
This prohibits a long, drawn out campaign like they had with Brexit where a figure like Fuck-Face Farage can firehouse propaganda all over the public’s faces while still allowing separatists to have their referendum and allowing the government to say, „We gave you what you asked for and you lost. Stop ya bitching.“
