Exact same thing happened to an American couple that I know. They bought one with us and the nazar bead broke before they even made home. It’s said it took the damage that was meant for you so can look at positively if you’re a spiritual person.
The original meaning is just that, a lightning rod but for curses targeting you. A talisman that breaks in the process. Superstition obviously but breaking is a positive sign that you got spared and it shielded you.
İt’s not „evil“ because it says „evil eye“ you aren’t cursed or anything it’s just a belief that this eye protects their users from negative energy and actually when it breaks it means it has done the job at protecting you by absorbing the bad energy or something.
