My ancestry is mainly German & English, so they were probably barbarians in Germania (given that the Angles and Saxons hadn’t moved to Britain yet). Rome was likely the only empire they’d ever heard of

Nah, my area (Scandinavia) was vaguely and indirectly known to the Romans, I suppose. (My ancestors traded with people who traded with the Romans.)
