    1. **In Brief:**

      * “What can we do to help cushion the blow for Canadians?” Carney asked at an event in Brampton, Ont. “That’s something we’re looking at.” Carney made this comment in response to a reporter asking what he’d say to Canadians facing close to $2 per litre at the pumps.
      * The prime minister said he knows Canadians are asking themselves every day when they go to fill their tanks or heat their homes, why they feel as if they’re bearing the costs of the Iran-U.S. war. Carney said “the short answer is because there’s a global market.”
      * Carney indicating that the Liberals are considering ways to offer consumers relief, comes on the heels of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre calling for gas taxes to be scrapped for rest of year. It also comes ahead of the spring economic update expected in the coming weeks.
      * The prime minister offered no additional detail on what help his government may have in mind, or be considering, nor the timeline for when any measures may come into effect.

It’s a clickbait article, there was no statement apart from we’re looking into it

Expecting a strategy full of nostalgia rather than following IEA recommendations like encouraging telework

      Nearly?

Come and fill up here in Vancouver, but I guess 2.20 is still nearly, although from the other side.

    5. I mean there’s not much he can do. The feds could remove their tax on gas for a short term gain, if the gas companies even lower the price of fuel at the cost of a massive loss on tax revenue.

The province could do the same with the same problem.

The only real solution is for the US to either stop existing or stop their stupid ass war on Iran.

I suppose the other solution is to frantically push green energy vehicles and energy but neither of those are quick, or cheap.

Glad we are heading into summer so the home heating oil wont be a big issue for long.

But if we don’t want the government to take on MORE DEBT, we can’t be asking them to cut fuel taxes.

I’m putting just over $200 a week in my car right now and it stings, but what would need to be cut to give me back $20 bucks?

His response on April 1st was to increase the industrial carbon tax

    8. Subsidizing price increases just allows inflation to increase and prevents the kinds of innovation and habit changes that reduces our dependency on fossil fuel.

If you want to benefit those who are actually hurting, do it through an income based credit. Those of us living above average means don’t need a break on gas, we need to buy more fuel efficient vehicles or reduce our unnecessary travel.

Addendum: If it’s about lowering transportation costs for necessities like food, there are other ways to do it… It’s not like the corporations selling us groceries are going to pass on any savings to the consumer anyway.

    9. It’s going to get much worse. I’ve seen pictures of diesel over $8 a gallon in the US. We’re facing a full blown fuel crisis.

The way to lower energy prices is to electrify everything.

We should double down on electrification. I acknowledge EVs are not practical for all scenarios (yet), but I do think the vast majority of people are just fine with the current EV abilities.

In case people haven’t noticed, gas price are up globally. Blame the orange clown.

How about cancelling the back to work mandates? And Provinces doing the same? Ask companies to offer more remote work?

Already bought my horses, oxen, and a sturdy prairie wagon. We going back to the good old days.

    15. Many Canadians are able to work from home. Creating a reduction in both pollution and gas consumption.

As kids we learned the 3 R’s. So much focus on recycling and reusing, but not enough focus on reduce.

Why people in office jobs need to go in just to jump on a Teams call?

I say this as a fully remote employee.

      It’s already $2.12 in Victoria*

(after loyalty discounters – eg Shell charges $2.15 with a 0.03 discount for BCAA, Chevron charges 2.22 with a 0.10 discount for their loyalty card, etc.)

We were middle class when covid started. Lower middle class now. I’m just hoping we can afford to live without going into debt now. Jfc.

    18. In before fédéral annonces the cut to taxes on gas and Québec annonces that it will increase it to match what it was before.

    19. Worth-Zone-8437 on

Diesel is $2.65 around the lower mainland. So „nearly“ $3 a litre

Jesus. We’re all going broke because some old man with dementia is blowing sh!t up…. without any plan.

    21. I’m a liberal but dislike Carney for this. Two easy wins: pursue a WFH policy (addresses the gas issue), and scrap the gun program (wasted money in general, not necessarily relevant to gas). Just those two alone would help tremendously.

    22. He should have just said affordability is the best it’s been in over a decade and ended it there.

He has the balls to say it in the house, why can’t he say it to reporters?

    23. papermoonskies on

Nearly??? Been to the west coast much? I guess we don’t exist as usual.

    24. Expensive_Society_56 on

I’m currently in Portugal where 95 octane is $3.25 per litre. I know that doesn’t help, knowing others are worse off, but it shows that the entire world is messed up.

    25. Knight_Machiavelli on

We’re currently in Sir Humphrey Appleby’s third stage of crisis management:

Stage 1: Nothing is going to happen

Stage 2: Something may be happening but we shouldn’t do anything about it yet

Stage 3: We should do something about it but there’s nothing we can do

Stage 4: There’s something we could have done but it’s too late now

    26. > Carney indicating that the Liberals are considering ways to offer consumers relief, comes on the heels of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre calling for gas taxes to be scrapped for rest of year

Or *axe the tax*, if you will.

    27. Could we not just renationalize the oil fields.

Why as a citizen of this oil exporting country am I paying global prices for oil ?!

Yeah i’m looking for a new system.

    28. chrismceachern on

$2.14 on Vancouver Island for the last two weeks. Can’t imaging what its gonna look like over the summer when prices usually jump. We were like $1.70-$1.80 not that long ago.
