I’m not interested in joining the EU. Their issues and problems, particularly ones of geography, are not the ones we face. I am all for closer ties, regualtory alignment, and liberalized movement of people and trade.

I’m one of the Canadians who would have said Not interested.
I would not want to give up the Canadian Dollar for the EURO, and while I’d appreciate the ability to travel in and out of Europe easier, I don’t think it would be worth it for the new regulatory framework that would come from it.
It’s not like it would help us with defense, it wouldn’t help us with trade, it would make it easier to maintain wage suppression as we could import workers from poorer EU countries without needing TFW, so it’s good for the wealthy.
Expanded trade relationship, yes, more open ways of moving labour from place to place sure, but I just am not in for all the things we’d need to give up.

What benefit exactly would we gain by giving up authority of our nation to people living on the other side of the planet?
Do you guys really think they would have our best interests in mind

„Open to“ sure. But that’s a softball question.
I wonder if someone paid for this Spark poll or if it’s just a way for them to do something cheap and get their name out to drum up future business.

The very first and largest problem is our border is now a border between the US and the EU, and the EU determines border law. Every treaty and agreement we have with the US is now invalid, at best, and the determination of what best serves Canada as the US’s neighbour is now determined by an entirely different continent.

Sign me up, I’ve long thought it would be a good idea to join the EU. Imagine being able to go live and work in Europe for a few years without needing a work visa.

I suspect that like with a lot of questions like this or voting reforms (which I am in favor of for the record) it’s fairly easy to get people to say they are open to something only to change their mind once more details are added.

I’m cool being friends with them but it’s a little ridiculous to be part of the EU when we’re nowhere close to them… We have significantly different issues than them due to geography. I don’t think any of them are dealing with NORAD and Pacific Tsunami risks. Meanwhile, we don’t have Russian on our border trying to invade and illegal immigrants floating over on rafts…

Joining the EU may be a long shot, but we could certainly start harmonizing some of our laws with their standards if we want to try and build a closer relationship in the future. That may not necessarily be membership, but it could involve greater economic ties.

We cannot join the EU. These articles are stupid and the headline is engagement bait. The EU determines a ton of laws of regulations on behalf of the member states and Canada is currently not compatible with that model. At most we could join in the same way that Norway has with the EEA, and Canada would prefer that arrangement over full membership anyway.

We already have trade with Europe. I admit I would like to go live in Europe, so it’s tempting, but Europe has major illegal immigration issues, which Canada would be responsible for (tons of space in canada), and Canada would then no longer have sovereignty (EU economic rules) and another layer of government. Canada would lose a lot and gain a lot of problems.

Yes let’s have people on the other end of the world control our immigration, energy, refugee system, and trade. Let’s just hand them the keys. Europe is doing great.

Horrific idea. We can trade with them without letting them take over our country.

The EU itself has said it’s not happening and no political party here has shown any interest at all.
I’d love for it to happen – but it’s not going to.
