An unmentioned reason for this is that the LDP is most popular with the elderly, and so their bulwark of support is literally dying off. Unbelievably, if people under 40 had decided the summer election, Sanseito would have won the house with a plurality, not the LDP.

Takaichi managed to regain the youth vote, but I doubt many of them are card-carrying LDP members. In fact they seem to prefer Takaichi specifically over the LDP itself as a larger political party.
