As someone who lives in brampton till about 2023 illegal basement units where tolerated and the reasons they were tolerated was because generally benefited a lot of the landlords and speculative housing class that dominated the city and got really rich off the massive surge of people…
It was seen as being discriminatory going after people’s housing situation during a massive population surge.
Now, many people seem quite confused, how this housing situation was even allowed, and based on what I can see is, even if there was not a rental unit, the idea of 10 to 15 people living in such a small house is actually not that uncommon in bramton but it is an extreme fire risk.
It was a semi detached house
Usually 10 12 people would live in a 3000 to 4000 sq foot house before
Bilaw enforcement are too friendly with the landlords, it’s a problem everywhere and regular audits would probably help
Enforce the bylaw to the maximum and build more homeless camps . City Hall doesn’t have much moral choice here.
Progressives have been pushing for landlord licensing for a long time.
