But we have carried on growing as a population without accompanying economic growth.

We have had two corrupt regimes back to back. Our wealth is siphoned into the pockets of the elites by their personal politicians.

For me the most annoying thing about moving back to UK after 30 years working abroad is the culture of ‘they’. They should do better, they should pick up rubbish, they should find me a job, they should do this, do that.

Just go out there and start doing things yourself. Pick up rubbish, help a neighbour, set up a small business, volunteer. Sure, it won’t unbreak Britain, but it will help a tiny bit, make you feel better, and you will make friends who also want to improve themselves and society, which again makes you feel better.

TLDR – whining Pom is a real thing. Stop it and go do stuff instead

    4. two problems are:

      1. UK government income from oil and gas has been dropping for dropping on average for some years:

      2. Almost all state owned assets and services have been sold off.

Both of these were use to keep taxes low – with that income dropping, it is very difficult to avoid increasing taxes.

The UK could have used the income for oil and gas to establish a sovereign wealth fund, as Norway did and which is now the largest in the world. But instead of thinking about the long term, UK politicians focused on short term tax cuts.

The transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich is by far the main issue. When you read about xx person now making millions, that money didn’t just pop into existence, it was transferred.

Tax avoidance costs all of us over 30 billion a year. Far far far higher than illegal immigrants cost us.

The only growth we’ve had is in population. Imo the jobs growth we’ve had has been low paid in logistics, care and retail. It seems to me that most skilled blue collar jobs have offered no decent apprenticeships, a draw bridge has been pulled up, coupled with expensive energy those jobs will likely disappear, either offshored or AI taking the job.

    7. Billionaires are playing people like a fiddle. Tories came to power after years of benefit claimants bashing, then they switched to vilifying Eastern Europeans to hold on to power and now it’s asylum seekers and all the other migrants they let in in record numbers. And the answer? REFORM, which is essentially Tories on steroids. Not only completely beholden to the ultra wealthy but also utterly incompetent and cruel.

I don’t get their end game though. Are they happy to see the world burn if it saves them few percent in taxes on wealth they won’t be able to spend in their lifetime anyway?

    8. Russian bots gonna bot.

Look at it this way folks. Farage and ‚yaxley-ball-bag the third‘ are both significantly richer than most people they ‚pretend‘ to represent. The issue isnt immigration, its rich media billionaires TELLING you your problems are immigration.

Honestly, if you think theyre fine and the immigrants arent, then ive got a bridge to sell you.

They deliberately target certain demographic’s. If youre in that demographic, think why. Then maybe, push back and do something about it.

We were busy fighting wars for US that has cost us billions. Over 20billion for Iraq and Afghanistan war alone. Could have been used for betterment of the country instead.

This is basically down to the tories. Labour promised the earth and have had the opportunity to fix things but they’ve just disasterfucked it even worse, they’ve opened the door to these goons as there is no alternative- both main line parties are pathetic

    11. Either-Juggernaut420 on

Well it’s an interesting opinion but total bull. biggest reform support is amongst pensioners who have the triple lock.

    12. evolveandprosper on

Decades of individual and corporate greed has „broken“ Britons. The relentless cutting of pay, conditions and publicly-funded services has done untold damage. The sell-off of publicly-owned utilities to the private sector in the name of „efficiency“ has created unaccountable monopolies that rapaciously increase their profits whilst providing deteriorating services. The endless demands for tax cuts from the people who need them least and the demonisation of the poor and minorities has been the background music.

    13. I’ve heard the UK described as a „bunker economy“.

As we’ve barely grown at all since 2008, people increasingly view the economy as a zero sum game. One in which if you gain, I lose. So older people who have a bit of wealth are then motivated to vote to protect their entitlements and assets at the expense of economic growth.

For example we’ve seen repeated „help to buy“ schemes which rather than address unrealistic house prices, provide extra cash to young people to allow them to just about pay these inflated insane prices… if they’re prepared to take 40 year mortgages. This is a price support to prevent the home prices of existing (older) owners from going down. Not really a subsidy for the young. What the young actually need is a healthy housing market where values are real.

Another example is the famous triple lock, which guarantees more and more government spending will be directed to the elderly at the expense of all other services.

This in turn leads to the student loan situation, because the government can’t and won’t invest in developing highly skilled young people. It instead forces them to pay over the odds for an education and spend 30 or 40 years of their working life burdened by debt and unable because of that to build their own wealth or get on in life.

None of this will be solved because the messages „house prices need to stabilise“ (ie not grow from 20 years so inflation can make them reasonable) and „pensioners must make do with less“ are electoral poison.

Neoliberalism and the blind belief in markets alone as the means to a materialist utopia is what is to blame. The future will require what we had in the past: leadership, imagination and policy.

    15. EasyTumbleweed1114 on

The fact that so many god damn people are immediately jumping to blaming immigrants despite the fact they add to the economy and while also struggling in poverty just like the rest of us really highlights why this country is so cooked. You have a crisis caused by elites and all anyone seems to comprehend is attacking the vulnerable, shameful.

    16. Which is odd considering Reform is stuffed with the Tories who caused it and lead by the tow people who engineered the Brexit that so cost the UK so much.

    17. blackkaviar_doc on

I have lived on the streets for 3 years and I can confirm, being a racist cunt is a choice. Being pushed into poverty isn’t. Don’t be a cunt

    18. Under the Tories this has been the plan, keep em sick, keep em poor and keep em uneducated then steal all the wealth.

Since Labour have been in power there has been real investment back into the country. Murdock press would have you believe otherwise. Take a look at [Good News](https://www.reddit.com/r/GoodNewsUK/)

    19. DevilishlyHandsome63 on

I’ve just read that this government now give out more in benefit payments than it takes in tax receipts. How on earth is that sustainable?
