Would rather Japan have 5500 nukes than China.
Then maybe leave them alone? China is speeding up production of their own nukes so they can kindly put a sock in it.
What’s the problem?
That claim can fool people who have no understanding of chemistry and physics. Reactors need 3-5% u-235. Weapons need 90%+. Refining 500 warheads in months requires facilities larger than what Iran and North Korea has. Even the US would find such a task difficult.
Japan would also need a delivery vehicle like an ICBM or a cruise missile which it does not have.
There’s nuance about the difficulties of actually using the plutonium as fissile material but thebasic concept is true that Japan can easily crank out at least hundreds of nukes. So what?
Nuclear latency is not a crime and not even in violation of the NPT. And China, which possess its own large (and rapidly growing) nuclear arsenal has no right to wail about someone else having the potential (not even actual weapons yet) to create nukes.
CCP need to fuck off.
And so like Iran china could attack Japan preemptively on the excuse they are a nuclear threat. They are waiting for Trump to backstab them I guess.

Given what Japan did to their neighbours during WW2 we need to make sure they are not in the position of developing or using those weapons.
Before anyone makes excuses for china like us did on iran. It is undeniable that iran is at 60% enriched uranium. It only takes weeks for 60% to turn 90%; and 60% itsrlf can be used as a „dirty“ bomb already.
The weeks to nuclear bomb narrative had some facts to it at the moment of attack. Israel was bound to hit Iran no matter what when they consider iran an existential enemy; the problrm was US getting dragged in happily. Maybe Bibi really has dirt on trump.
Japan on the other hand is raw plutonium; china is talking crap at this point. It takes a hella long time and effort to get from this to nukes
So don’t piss Japan off.
