crazy how a 16 year old can basically become a kyabajo because it’s tradition

I hate how often promises of beauty and glamour are used to ensnare young women to people who want to own them, especially when the culture generally tells them their value is tied to their beauty. That part is not specific to Japan, but man does the romanticization of *geisha* misrepresent what it has always been: the selling of women as property.

It has always been about prostitution, even child prostitution.

even in the milder form, japanese „apprenticeship“ leave so much to be desired.

*“wait, you spent 8 years as apprentice? as in you got the lowest pay in the house for 8 years?“*
*“kinda, what’s wrong with that? at least you got paid. in the other house, all you get in food, dorm, and a bit of allowance“*

the geisha case is just human trafficking for prostitution disguised as traditional art.
*“The Kyoto Traditional Art Foundation, which oversees the city’s geisha districts, said in a written response that there are no formal contracts but that customs are explained in advance, with consent obtained from both the individual and their parents.*
*It said mixed bathing with customers does not occur and that underage drinking is prohibited, adding that efforts are made to protect maiko from sexual harassment.*
*Kiritaka and others dispute that account.*
*She said she continues to receive consultations from current maiko reporting inappropriate touching by customers, including allegations of assault, pregnancy and abortion.“*

forget reform, this thing need to be burned down and rebuild from the ground up.

The modern day slavery in Japan is the japanese technical intern training program. But because the victims aren’t Japanese, people don’t care.
