      God forbid we start building affordable EVs here when all the North American car companies are trying to pivot away from electric DURING AN ENERGY CRISIS. Climate crisis as well. Ford needs to read the room.

      Here’s a thought. Why doesn’t Doug just work on building a Canadian Auto company? Make Project Arrow a reality. Canadian made EV with Canadian parts.

      We’re a first world country that acts like a 3’rd world country. We keep on trying to get foreign manufacturers to build car factories in Canada.

      >“We can’t have cheap Chinese parts and kits coming over to be assembled,“ he said. „We’re dead against this.“

      How is this so different from the current integration between the USA, Mexico and Canada? We receive parts from Mexico and the USA and assemble them here; likewise, they receive parts from us and do some assembly themselves.

      It seems pretty clear to me that Ford’s opposition was never about protecting Ontarian jobs from foreign competition. It was *always* about opposing EVs in favour of ICE vehicles.

      A lot of people are still living in denial. The Trump administration is pressing hard the big 3 to bring back their operations to the US and it won’t change anytime soon.

      Wait, we’ve attracted foreign investment that would give an economic boost to our people and we’re against it?

      Local manufacturing means good local jobs. 

      I don’t understand why we would be against it

      Why does it have to be Stellantis? Keep them as far away from vehicles as possible, especially Chinese ones that are already going to be fighting an uphill battle convincing people about quality.

      Did everyone forget Magna exists? The government should kick Swamy’s ass into gear and get him to start investing some goddamn money in his empty and downturning facilities here. They have a brand new plant in Heart Lake being used as a storage facility because a contract fell through.

      Why? It’s going to keep some jobs here. The big 3 are pretty much leaving. Electric is the future and the American company aren’t keeping up.

      I don’t know why these stories have to be written so poorly.

      From what I can distil from this:

      1. Stellantis is in discussions with Zhejiang ‌Leapmotor Technology, a Chinese EV maker to build EVs in some capacity at its idled Brampton Factory. According to Bloomberg, the talks are preliminary.
      2. Stellantis has an existing JV with Leapmotor in which it holds 51% of the JV and 21% of Zhejiang ‌Leapmotor Technology
      3. Stellantis had closed the plant for retooling to produce the Jeep Compass, but under threat of tariffs from Trump, moved Compass production to Illinois.
      4. In 2022, the Gov. of Canada advanced $529M in funding to Stellantis and got guarantees that they would not close the Brampton factory (and others) in return. The move to produce the Compass in Illinois is a clear violation of this.
      5. Stellantis is in discussions with the Gov. of Canada on how to resolve this breach of contract. The Leapmoter deal may be a piece of this. Company spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin stated that „Stellantis remains focused on a strong Canadian footprint“.
      6. Doug Ford and the Unifor Union have concerns that the Leapmotor deal may be just for final assembly of knockdown kits, with the parts and subassemblies all made in China.
      7. If the deal is just for final assembly, this would employ far fewer Canadians than a full production line.
      8. Doug Ford has declared this is unacceptable – it is not clear if he is against the whole deal or final assembly only deal. It is also not clear if he has any special knowledge of the details of the negotiations.

      Doug Ford will obviously have some intel on Stellantis. Does he know what is being proposed – final assembly only or a fully integrated auto line? Is he just blowing smoke?

      Stellantis has shown their hand, blatently. They are a parasitic company who will always demand the taxpayer fund their growth with the promise of „jobs“, but will privatize and prioritize profit. Every time. All corporations are the same, the big 3 are just more blatent about it. They traditionally have been large employers, but those days are quickly coming to a close. Automation and AI are here and growing, and will displace working people at an accelerated rate. Go into an Amazon warehouse sometime, almost completely automated and very few employees. The largest number of humans are the techs who program and fix the machines.

      Please don’t build here in Canada.. as a consumer I want a cheap electric car. I don’t want to pay made in Canada tax.. please don’t..
