  1. reading this drinking my 4th monster. smh. That adhd medication probably has more bodies then caffeine, but sure lets blame the energy drink. Worst part is this will just lead to higher prices for whatever reason, just like naming them health supplements did in the first place.

If you’re going to ban a product there needs to be more information than this. Has anyone else died? What ingredients in particular cause the heart problem?

  3. I am 30 years old and take ADHD medicine (specifically Vyvanse), and had my heart rate got to 180 after having a coffee while taking my medication. I had only been taking my medicine for a few months, so it was likely that my situation may not be the same as everyone. It was quite a scary situation and I was considering calling 911, as I was really worried about having a heart attack. I had never had a heart related concern in my life up until that point, but it showed me that mixing ADHD medicine with caffeine is straight up a horrible idea, and something my doctor’s really never discussed with me.

Some people might quip that I am an dumb for having multiple stimulants, but to go from feeling fine and a little tired to straight up feeling like you could have a heart attack after having a coffee is something that can happen to a lot of people if they don’t understand the effects these medications can have.

People really going to the Government daddy instead of parenting their dumb kids?

  5. Plot twist: he drowned on the redbull, while having a stroke from the elevated heart-rate…

  6. A cup of coffee has about the same amount of caffeine has a can of red bull.

  7. Unfortunately, he was probably predisposed to ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation and the combination triggered it. I have an ICD (heart was scarred and damaged from myocarditis) and I’m not allowed to take ADHD medication anymore.

  8. Sad story but a medium Tim Hortons coffee contains 200-205 mg of caffeine, which is 20-25mg more than what is allowed to be in an energy drink can.

And we are not about to restrict Tim Hortons coffee…

„Oh but energy drinks are bad, they have sugar“

Sugar based drinks now barely have a 15% market share, most people drink Zero Sugar nowadays. That argument doesn’t hold anymore.

On the other hand people still ask for sugar in their coffee still……..

So again, it’s sad, but it’s pretty well known that these drugs are like speed, and if you stack stimulants…well your heart might not like it.

Now we have to believe that both the doctor and the pharmacist didn’t tell the parents the warnings around the medication…which is very unlikely. And I think that if they were really responsible, the parents would be angry at them, not going on a crusade against energy drinks.

    But again, sad story.

I just had my small Red Bull; it has 80 mg of caffeine, which is less than a small Mac coffee.

This kid should have been made aware (by his parents and doctor)of the dangers of any stimulant or other drug that could cause problems when mixed with his medication.

Instead of parental and self accountability, they want the government to blanket ban caffeinated drinks.

  11. I’d take a closer look at his ADHD medication dosage. Blaming the single can of Red Bull which has the same caffeine as a coffee seems confusing when his ADHD medications have a way higher chance of side effects but aren’t blamed in the article. If someone drinks a single can of Red Bull and dies they must have been on the verge of death before the first sip, again no more caffeine then a regular cup of coffee.

I take ADHD medication, its literally speed, if I forget I took my dose I grind my teeth, and I’m a grown man. Drugs like dexedrine only coming in 10mg capsules. So one its very easy to take more then you should and the dose doubles every time your doctor prescribe a dosage increase.

Don’t get me wrong, ADHD is a real thing, but I think its over/self diagnosed and over prescribed.

Humans like stimulates, similar drugs were legal and popular in the 30s and beyond, recreationally used for „vitality“ and weight lose. And Caffeine is so normal in society we don’t think about it much, but if it was introduced to the market for the first time today, our government would be trying to regulate or ban it, its a well tolerated and commonly used drug, but it is a stimulant non the less.

I think we live in a high pace society, full of screens, long work hours, long commutes and busy lives. We have issue with depression and other mental health problems, and I think ADHD is more common or more likely to be diagnosed today, but I also think a small hit of speed just helps people deal with a lot of the fatigue that our society creates, caffeine just isn’t enough anymore.

Im conflicted about kids taking this medication and drinking energy drinks. The combination of the two, which I am very guilty of, is hazard, but the amount of caffeine in energy drinks is not inherently dangerous, a twelve ounce cup of coffee has 113 to 247 milligrams of caffeine which is more than the regular red bull on the low enf and nearly 3 times as much on the high side. Energy drinks are really on dangerous because their delicious and kids like them.

I suspect this poor kid already had a heart problem, took to much of the ADHD medication, drank more caffeine than they realized or a combination of those factors. The demonizing of the Red Bull is just an easy target because a lot of people don’t like energy drinks and its easier to blame then a medication that a doctor and parents put their kid on, which like I said, is most likely a powerful amphetamine.

The combination of the two might be a valid concern, but i feel like these people lost their son and don’t want to admit giving children speed is dangerous when its easier to blame one of the most commonly consumed and well tolerated drugs in the world. Like it or not, most people’s morning double double has as much sugar and caffeine as energy drinks do, if not more, and its not regulated at all and and no one ever talks about it.

I drink Rockstar Punched Fruit Punch on a daily basis & I feel fine.

Jesus Christ, this story is so ludicrous it must’ve come from the Beaverton

This kid’s Doctor and/or Pharmacist are the parties most responsible for his death.

Not the Gov’t, not Red Bull Inc and certainly not his Mom.

  15. FreedomCanuck556 on

Skill issue. Your meds say not to mix with caffeine. You probably should not combine them. Why is Quebec just wanting to ban things. I feel like people from Quebec can’t take personal responsibility from what I have seen.

    > The combination of his ADHD medication and the energy drink caused an arrhythmia that led to his sudden death.

I’m not sure that’s an accurate conclusion. Red bull has a bit less caffeine than a cup of coffee, and far less than stronger brews like Starbucks. This is probably a youth who had an underlying heart condition and one or both stimulants may be at fault. Regardless, this isn’t something likes likely to be a general risk to everyone, even those on ADHD meds.

  17. • prescribed ADHD medications with tons dangerous of side effects
    • drinks 1 Red Bull
    • mfw parents blame the 1 Red Bull

  18. JimmyTheJimJimson on

There is an almost zero percent chance someone died from drinking Red Bull by itself. I’m calling BS

  19. JohnDorian0506 on

They should also petition to ban coffee and tea.

Zachary Miron died in the winter of 2024 while skiing in Morin Heights, in the Laurentians, with his class. The combination of his ADHD medication and the energy drink caused an arrhythmia that led to his sudden death.

Since then, his parents have been fighting to ban the sale of these drinks to those under 18, or at minimum under 16.

  20. Healthy_Yard_3862 on

Zero accountability as usual sucks their son died but jeeze these kind of ppl are pathetic

  21. CastAside1812 on

Man we really need to stop mass prescribing stimulants to kids.

I’m ready for your down votes. Half of Reddit is on psychiatric medication for some reason.

  22. Bigfatmauls on

Kid takes amphetamines and the parents blame an energy drink. Maybe we should be a bit more careful about mass prescribing kids speed, I highly doubt that the red bull would’ve had anything to do with this on its own.

  23. Given how mundane a drink with 80mg of caffeine is – i hope the lesson we take is education to prevent this rather than banning energy drinks and just have this happen again when someone in a smiliar situation drinks a coffee.

  24. Can quebec honestly just screw off with their crybaby helicopter state trying to control every other province.

  25. > The combination of his ADHD medication and the energy drink caused an arrhythmia that led to his sudden death.

Found the problem, and it isn’t red bull.

  26. ilikebunnies1 on

When you mix pharmaceutical meth (ADHD medications) and another stimulant yes there is a possibility of this happening. That should be the messaging here.

Young kids shouldn’t be drinking energy drinks in general. But one energy drink doesn’t put you at risk of a lethal arrhythmia alone.

  27. CJKCollecting on

A single can of Red Bull has as much caffeine as a coffee. There is more to the tragedy here I’d wager.
