I’m sure in general there will be a very mature and measured response to all reviews of this film. Right?

  2. Earthpig_Johnson on

So same as the first one?

Looking forward to the mindless eye candy.

  3. TomBirkenstock on

The sequel to the awful first film is also awful. I’m really shocked and surprised.

  4. YodaForceGhost on

Definitely trying to profit off all the kids who’ll want to see this. It’s not meant to be an Oscar-caliber film

Honestly the part that stood out to me is the review calling the first movie „one of the best animated films in years“

  6. No_Cheetah4762 on

I mean the first was basically G rated Family Guy. Thin story and just a bunch of references. Why would the sequel be any different?

I dunno what reviewers and adults in general are looking for out of a movie, but I’ve come to “rate” movies based on how well they entertain/engross/whatever their target audiences. Mario is, at its heart, a family/kid’s movie. My kid adored the first one, therefore, it succeeded and I rate it pretty highly for that. I’m expecting more of the same out of the sequel.

  8. So the same thing as the Minecraft and five nights of Freddy’s movies. Most of the target audience will be happy to get the kids out, and they probably love it like the first one.

I have been waiting for the Mario cinema experience I have been owed for like 35 years. All little kid me wanted was an overly colorful visual vomit of video game Easter Eggs while the 1 UP noise and level 1-1 theme plays. I don’t wanna hear this played out bullshit about the „charm“ of the 90s movie and „technically you had a-“ no. That was not a Mario Bros movie. I know it and everybody knows it. I will watch and enjoy that shit but this new animated movie has fulfilled my childhood dream and I’ll watch it and all 700 sequels. As long as it feels even remotely like I’ve fired up my SNES and am watching a movie of that, I don’t care how „good“ (whatever definition of that word youtube crybabies are going with that day) it is. Mario will save the day and triumphant music will play. You Are a Super Player, thank you for playing. Let’s A Go, Motherfuckers.

  10. I’m fine with people enjoying a mindless Mario movie.

But a Mario movie doesn’t *have* to be mindless. Oh well.

  11. We have Chris Pratt as Mario, was that not an indicator? Look the only real question is will I have fun? And if it’s anything like the first one, the answer is yes. The real question is when do we get the Sonic crossover?

In other words, my 6 year old will love it and it’ll sell toys, like it’s meant to.

Excellent, as a huge Nintendo fan this seems made for me and children. Can’t wait.

  14. I actually really enjoyed the first one, granted i was absolutely lit on edibles at the time.

An animated movie about a video game is a mindless 90 minutes offering fan service? Crazy.

It being a great movie would be a bonus, but it’s Illumination. I don’t expect it to be anything beyond “fun,” even if it’s objectively bad lmao.

As long as I can watch it without being bored and there’s a good bit of references to the games for me to point out, then I’m happy.

They’re starting to become like the FNAF movies in terms of critical reception

  18. TheCircleLurker on

Filled with Easter eggs? So a movie for the fan base and not for anyone who’s never played the games. Guess it’ll bobomb!

  19. I said it to other people but illumination doesnt make good movies. They make movies that make money. Thats the reason nintendo went with them.

As a resident Despicable Me fan and huge fuckin nerd, ive been disappointed by Illumination before. Rug pulled with a sequel that practically squandered the characters they had. (DM3 to 4)

However Mario 1 was a decent enough simple movie to establish the base and i expect the sequel to expand their interpretation of the characters. If Galaxy pulls a Despicable Me 4 by throwing the character threads to the wayside too much, yeah ill be disappointed.

That’s weird. One would expect that a cartoon movie based on a children’s video game would do something like spend more time exploring the contradictions implied in Shopenhauer’s Theory of Open Individualism than be dumb fun that makes a bunch of references to those games.

A creative choice on the director’s part, I suppose.

  22. BackgroundBit8 on

The original was a dull and meandering how could they make something even worse?

  23. The biggest complaint ive seen is that it was made for Mario fans. Offers nothing new into the world of Mario.

So a Mario movie is about Mario and feels like Mario…this doesnt sound bad to me

  24. deviltakeyou on

Why are people looking to Super Mario for an enthralling plot? I literally just want to see easter eggs and Yoshi. I bet they’re going to say the same thing about the Legend of Zelda movie when it comes out. The games all have almost the exact same plot every single time. It’s almost like it’s the gameplay people care about, not the story.

  25. My hot take on these movies..

The first Mario movie, Wreck-It Ralph, the lego movie, the Minecraft movie, And, yes, the emoji movie… are all fine movies with basically the same storyline and they’re all about on par with each other.

I say this because I think people hate the emoji movie because of how dumb the concept is, But as a movie it’s fine. It’s acceptable, It’s funny at times and the story is heartwarming and palatable.

Some of these movies get beloved because people like the IP and some of them get shit on cuz people don’t.

They’re all the same fucking movie and none is better than any of the others. It’s all corporate slop and it’s fine. It’s fine. It does what it meant to do. They’re all fine.

I could put on any one of these movies right now and I would enjoy my evening.

Its a shame that no matter how little effort they put into truly creating something special, this lazy effort with member berries and references Will always net them the pay day. They ride off of the extremely popular brand, until, like marvel, they slowly dilute that brands worth

  27. Chalupaca_Bruh on

Nintendo isn’t going to let Illumination craft a compelling story or character depth that risks contradicting 40+ years of paper thin plot in the games. Mario has very specific lane if Miyamoto’s creative input in other games is anything to go by.
The characters and the worlds exist solely to deliver fun and interesting gameplay mechanics.

I get wanting more but this is arguably Nintendo’s worst franchise if we’re looking to get any semblance of compelling narrative. For that, I’m fine with a fun, if mindless movie. We’re not getting a Thousand Year Door adaptation, as much as I’d love one.

Zelda’s execution will be the interesting one…

What i I told you that the 1st Super Mario movie was barely a movie and more of a fun experience?

  29. schoolisuncool on

They said the same thing about the first one and then everybody loved it. Whatever

  30. TJ_McWeaksauce on

Makes me think of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie. It’s barely a horror movie, but it’s loaded with fan service and it made a tidy profit, especially since its costs were low.

Super Mario Galaxy is expensive as hell, but kids, families, and fans will still watch it and make it profitable.
