>Electronic cigarettes aren’t risk-free, it seems. A review published this week finds that vaping is almost certainly carcinogenic.
>Scientists in Australia examined the medical literature on vaping, including case reports and animal studies. They found convincing evidence that e-cigarettes can cause cancer. Many questions remain, however, including the exact level of cancer risk posed by such products, the researchers say.
>“Nicotine-based e-cigarettes are likely to be carcinogenic to humans who use them causing an indeterminate burden of oral cancer and lung cancer,” they wrote in their paper, [published](https://academic.oup.com/carcin/article-abstract/47/1/bgag015/8555982?login=false) Monday in the journal Carcinogenesis.

The risks are the same as a fog machine plus flavors and equipment.

From the original article.
The direct evidence is:
We still don’t have direct evidence that there are more cancer cases than expected among people who vape.

Does anyone know if in experiments and/or quantitative research they address the different types of vape equipments? There’s disposable, rechargeable, high and low voltage, the build material, so many things to consider
Great. Now instead of getting sick due to second-hand tobacco, I’m at risk of getting sick due to second-hand tutti-frutti. Thanks, smokers!
Well looks like its time for a lawsuit directed at california for not warning me.
I find it fascinating that so many people kind of *believed* there weren’t any inherent risks with vaping simply because the research wasn’t finished and there weren’t any findings yet.
It feels like COPD and emphysema are the more likely risks of vaping. Can anyone give some insight into why we don’t see studies on these as much? That is, lung damage caused by inhalation seems to be the bigger risk as opposed to cancer, just considering the much smaller number of compounds present in ecig vapor compared with cigarettes.
Who would’ve guessed this. A medical breakthrough for sure.
We really posting something from gizmodo? That was a super bland and 0 fact based article on a pretty serious subject. They didn’t say what chemicals or what metals led to this maybe cancer. They didnt say if they were using disposables, mods, type of coils, temperature, flavors (or brands), nic strength… or really anything about anything. It probably causes cancer, though maybe an intermediate amount of cancer, but really we dont know. Oh, and theres other studies that dont have the same findings we have. And here’s some other people who are also studying this and they disagree with this study.
I get it. It needs more testing and study. But stuff like this is a huge waste of time for everyone.
Apparently bacon does as well… Give us a comparison of smoking vs. vape. That would be a better study. I’m sure most people know that any substance going into the lungs other than air has a potential to cause cancer.
OP it would have been more appropriate to link to the [Journal Article](https://academic.oup.com/carcin/article-abstract/47/1/bgag015/8555982?login=false), rather than a press release discussing the article. People would, hopefully, have reacted a little more positively if that were the case.
As someone who smoked before vaping for years, then vaped for years, and then recently quit vaping. Yeah, I’m sure it’s not ideal. Especially if you take dry hits. It’s just sort of common sense that filling your lungs with stuff other than air would introduce some stress, and isolated, vaporized nicotine, while non-carcinogenic, isn’t non-harmful. It does restrict blood vessels over time. It’s not great for your cardiovascular system in general. But it’s still way better than smoking. This is also pretty common sense. I’d still take it over heavy drinking or heavy pot smoking (vaping + edibles excluded).
The main reason I kept going for so long was for the focusing effect, mood heightening, alertness raising, etc.. Nicotine is a stimulant and has a few effects on your brain. And it’s addictive, but it’s pretty easy to quit as hardcore addictive substances go. There’s just less pressure.
It’s crazy how much money gets spent on science in attempt to confirm things that people want to be true (vaping=bad) that don’t work out or produce inconclusive results like this.
