    1. NATO is a defensive alliance. This has nothing to do with NATO and everything to do with America wanting to impose their will in their pursuit of who the fuck even knows.

    2. AsyncSyscall on

NATO is a defensive alliance, not an extended US military base. The one nation cracking the NATO alliance is the one treating it as such.

      Not a NATO crack??

It has something to do with a total crackpot.
But Spain not wanting to be part of a war it isn’t involved it not something crazy

    4. To planes that are taking part in the Iran war* FIFY

Also, Iran is not covered by NATO.
Also, NATO is a defensive alliance.

      Headline is doomer bullshit.

This isn’t a crack; this is NATO showing resilience in the face of trump trying to undermine and abuse it.

    6. looks like is happening the same with Sigonella in Italy.. nato has nothing to do with it, US starts a war by itself (well with Israel) for unknown reasons without saying anything to their „allies“ and again doesn’t know how to finish it.. don’t see what NATO has to do with it

      NATO is a defensive alliance.

The US is conducting an illegal offensive, has attacked civilian infrastructure and just officially threatened the water and electrical grid for 93 million civilians.

This has nothing to do with NATO.

    8. Spain is really leading by example here. All of Europe should be equally firm.

    9. For decades, the story was that NATO was coined as defensive alliance. It is – European nations have zero appetite for aggression.

However, what USA was for years actually doing showed different picture and very aggressive posture. For Americans NATO was never a defensive alliance, and they are really pissed that Europeans, rightly, push back today.

    10. And such is the problem of alliances, there is always a caveat. Even though NATO like many are pointing out, is a defensive alliance, the reality is that sooner or later with growing pull to war by many nations across the globe and conflicts rising in Europe and Middle East, the inevitable call for action even beyond the orginal mandate *will* happen, and alliances easily crumble due to the inability to comply (as stupid as it may seem).

In truth the only exception one can give in terms of alliances anyway is probably the Anglo-Portuguese alliance which has been standing since the 14th century, mainly because it is diplomatic in nature.

    11. Every NATO nation should do so.

We are a defensive alliance and this is a war caused by Israel and the Pedo president of the United States.

    12. *Exposing cracks the Americans have created. The only country that has ever used NATO is the US, let’s not forget that. Trump thinks it’s his personal auxiliary force for whatever stupid war he starts. NATO is already dead and we shouldn’t fear the Americans leaving, they are already out, they planned to invade Greenland, they only called it off because the European alliance made it to costly for them to attempt. If not for the presence of other European forces, they would have attacked Greenland and Denmark.

    13. On the contrary, this is the first time NATO has not acted as an attack alliance every time the US says jump. It gives me hope for the future.

      NATO cracks? Lol.

You mean NATO resolve standing up against abuse of power?

As others have said, NATO is a defensive alliance. Most importantly, however, Trump did not bother consulting with any of his allies before attacking Iran. In the past, NATO has engaged in coordinated action together, most notably in the bombing of Yugoslavia to stop the ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Leaving aside the fact that the circumstances were very different, on that occasion NATO acted collectively after significant internal debate.

In this case, the US acted on their own, and only after they made a mess of things, they decided to involve NATO.

Let NATO be bygone and build an EU defensive alliance instead plus possibly UK and Canada. Or stay carpet vassal states, they ain’t many alternatives.

    17. -The_Blazer- on

Italy also just denied a military base for landing US bombers, and the Italian government isn’t exactly left-wing. Trump has really gone over the line on this one.

If all other countries copied Spain the U.S. may not be so psychotic

    19. TheRealAfinda on

      It doesn’t expose SHIT.

NATO is a defense only kind of thing. You don’t owe people shit that go and start wars of agression just because.

    20. I guess there’s a lot to learn from Spain for the entire world. Most countries esp. Europeans have been bending over backwards to please Trump and it looked so embarassing last year. Europe has been so obsessed with Russian war that they have pinned their entire existence on defeating Russia. Its perfectly fine to have the ambition of defeating Russia but to have only one ambition in life is dangerous. EU is a developed market with over 500 million people, the economy offers everything from manufacturing to services to agriculture and its probably the best continent to live in, so in a way it offers every small and big thing to the world. But European leaders have to behave like world leaders rather than acting as side kicks to US. Russia will never attack EU and if they do they can never defeat EU as it has nuclear bombs. So why this massive fascination with Russia that you are ready to trade your self respect just so that the US also calls Russia bad?

The illegal aggression against Iran is not covered by any article of NATO. You sign a treaty and you follow its clauses.

      that’s first-year law school stuff

If Spain initiated a war to regain control of the phosphate resources in Western Sahara, would NATO support it?

    22. NATO is not intended to support singular members unilaterally committing acts of aggression. It’s made to discourage that, from both its members and their adversaries.

No NATO member should support the U.S. in their current endeavor. None. They should do everything they can to oppose the U.S. use of any NATO asset for the war in Iran.

Trump et al need a hard lesson here – and while they’re probably too dumb to actually learn it, some will take heed and the harm reduction is also worthwhile.

I say all of the above as a former U.S. Army officer who is appalled by the current state of affairs and glad that I retired ahead of Trump’s inauguration.
