Is it legal to talk to someone in the car with you in Japan or Portugal? How is that different to talking to someone on the the phone hands free?

  2. Any rationale for Montana and Missouri allowing phone use while driving?

Funny that you could drive down the same road for 250 miles and experience 3 different levels of legality.

  3. Just did my license in portugal last month and I think this is wrong? You can use earbuds and a lot of cars pair with the phone automatically.

It’s “illegal” to hold the phone in your hands but even my mom does and nothing ever happened

  4. I’d expect that mobile phone use is not legal in many of those countries, because of a general „don’t cause danger on the road” law.

The map was made in 2021, so some of these possibly changed. I know my state, Alabama, in the last few years, changed to hands-free only.

  6. Pennsylvania’s laws changed within the last year. Hands on is illegal.

    Prior law was texting illegal.

Colorado made hands on illegal a few months ago. Seems like many places have become more strict the past 5 years since this was made.

Pretty sure you can use hands off in Japan. I mean you can literally watch antenna tv in your car.

It’s funny that Nunavut, Canada is legal. I mean they have almost no roads (under 1000km) and probably next to no cell coverage at all 😂.

This is not true, you can’t drive and use the phone while driving in Panama, and I’m sure in Costa Rica neither.

  11. In Zimbabwe, it is illegal to even have a mobile phone on your body when driving – regardless of whether or not you are using it. I got fined for having my phone in my pocket.
I thought to myself, “Mr Traffic Officer is broke and desperate for a bribe.”

But when I tried to fight the fine, I found out that this law actually exists, albeit rarely enforced.

In other words, your map has some inaccuracies.

  12. I love Nunavut being legal. There’s almost no roads. Snowmobile is often more useful than car.

  13. But it’s completely legal for essential car controls to be 4 menus deep on a massive touchscreen attached to the dashboard.

South Carolina just recently put laws into effect so that only hands free is legal

  15. Using a handheld phone while driving is illegal in Tunisia
it’s legal if it does not involve the use of your hands or one of your hands.

so Tunisia is red, not green

It’s illegal in Dominican Republic, if you’re grabbing the phone or looking at the phone in some way.

Well done Japan. I remember Mythbusters doing a segment back in the day of flip phones where they compared talking on the phone to drinking amd driving. The phone was markedly worse. There should be no distractions while operating thousands of pounds of metal going 10s of miles an hour.
