      African countries played bear no responsibility for the new war in the Middle East, yet they are the ones who are more exposed to economic harm stemming from the conflict. A series of crises, including the pandemic and invasion of Ukraine have hit African economies hard. The reason they are so vulnerable is that they are net importers of refined oil products, for example all of Kenya’s fuel comes from the Middle East, the UAE particularly. It’s not just fuel and its knock-on effects, it’s also fertilizer shortages that can be extremely impactful. Energy experts say that another month or two of conflict will lead to uncharted territory with unpredictable consequences.
