Hope they do this.
What a stupid headline, reads like the Govt are paying for modular homes when it’s really just an extension of the rent a room scheme.
Wait until everyone has one in their back garden and parking wars step up a gear.
Most people in new developments do not even have 45 sqm garden to put those in. Congratulations to planning experts enforcing shoebox size developments. And with 0.56 parking space per house it will end weekly dramas reported on RTE News.
We’ll let you rent out your shed tax free!

Please tell me the headline doesn’t tell the full story.
The gov solution to the housing crisis is to build homes in people’s back gardens so they can rent them out tax free?!
Jesus fucking Christ.
Just build some goddamn homes.
Does the article actually mention any progress on the actual legislation to allow 45sqm builds? This was announced quite some time ago (well over a year) and has gone nowhere.
Incentivised shanty towns. This government will do literally anything other than build accommodation.
Will this not just be used by people to make Airbnbs out their back
The public consultation they ran was for modular units for family members not rentals. Parking is a pain as it is and we are packed like sardines in housing estates. I bet landlords will jump at the chance to add modular units to already packed properties making a bad situation worse regarding lack of amenities. This is such a bad idea… It will give everyone carte blanche to build whatever they want.
We have a 3/4 acre site which we live on – large garden and large driveway. We live less than 30km from the GPO so very commutable to Dublin.
After hearing this news, we will definitely consider looking into a credit union loan and installing a 1bed self-contained unit. More than enough space to do a decent job of it.
20 years ago, I was renting something similar in a Tipperary town at €400 per month. Personally I was much happier there than renting a room in an owner occupied house.
It’s not a long term solution to housing but it fills a gap for people at different points in their lives.
Will the 6 year rental rule apply for these modular homes in people’s gardens? Or will it be an extension of your own home that you are renting out the same as now?
