Valve is no saint and they make billions from unregulated gambling in cs and tf.
I would question how good Valve is at making money. They are just given money based on their market position, but that says nothing other than „we were here first and now no one can take that away from us, regardless of what they do“.
If we take away the money they make from selling other people’s games and separate the projects, how many of them are even in the black? Would the company be profitable? Years of R&D to sell a few million of a niche product with fairly low profit margins. I guess the unregulated gambling could make enough to cover all the pet projects, but that wouldn’t make eg. SteamDeck profitable on its own.
Don’t get me wrong – I wouldn’t complain, that’s the benefit of working at a private company that has a revenue stream that prints money, but why start calling people out then? Just stfu and do your thing.
I mean … yeah … Epic games aren’t sweethearts and … they are objectively wrong with what they are doing but uh…
valve isn’t exactly free and clear from some suuuuuuuuper shady shit, dude has a superiority complex.
Fuck Valve, and Gabe, and Tim Sweeny, and Epic.
Why don’t you look up how diverse Valve’s staff is for the first massive red flag.
I think Gabe drank his own kool-aid a bit too much and took too much credit for the initial success of the company when it was much more of a collaborative effort and now he’s cruising around on Yachts thinking he’s PC Jesus that can do no wrong, that and the massive success of steam basically heralded the creative death of valve as a company.. they just exist to make as much money as possible now.
I work in games, and this is sad but not surprising. Ambition is what grows companies and creates layoffs. Same driver. Only difference is success or failure. Epic failed at fighting Roblox, this is what happens. Valve has done nothing, can’t release most of its projects and sits there getting paid. So of course it’s more stable.
The real shit show is public companies with CEO’s that have something to prove. Be wary of those. Worst places to work is an executive bunch who want to “the next big thing” but know jack shit on how to get there. Expect mass layoffs.
The smoldering wreckage of Cary Towne Center is a fitting monument to Epic Games decline.
In 2021, Epic spent $95 million to buy the land under an old mall in Cary, North Carolina to be the site of their new vanity headquarters. Tim wanted to build an „Apple campus“ for Epic in his own backyard. Then, not two years later in 2023, they laid off 830 people people due to cashflow problems. At the end of 2024, with no progress on the gravel lot of the former mall, the town withdrew Epic’s zoning permits.
Fast forward to 2026, Epic still owns the land, all while laying off another 1000 employees.
“made more money than I’ll ever make” what?
Epic fail. You can’t pivot your company to new projects? Just thought Fortnite money would be endless? Management failed and the boots on the ground pay the price.
Be like Gabe with his 6 yachts and never truly on land anymore. What a guy.

People forget they’re making like 400k at Valve.
