I just saw a TikTok where someone was saying “the UK makes me gluttonous”, they’re Northern and people in the comments were like “there’s no third spaces”. Then you look at obesity rates and you realise, this is not a UK-wide thing, this is a non-London thing.
I do think there is a relationship between obesity rates and how the local population feels. Look at Lincolnshire, high obesity rates but also the most likely to vote Brexit or Reform UK, I think they’re sad. They have a sad population, and I almost feel sorry for them.
This is not say Londoners are all sunshine and rainbows, but there’s more third spaces, more opportunities, more social mobility, etc. while this isn’t the case in places like Lincolnshire or Northeast England. Actually if you go deeper into Northeast England, it’s Newcastle that has the lower obesity rate in that region, and it’s also more likely to go to Labour and Greens and has a growing economy, while Middlesbrough and Hartlepool are doing much worse and more likely to go to Reform.

I don’t live in the UK any more, but when I return I’m struck by the fat women and chicken wings everywhere. And the skinny guys that have to settle for chubby ladies. It’s depressing.

I was in Th Uk once and saw so many overweight people. I guess Hartlepool is just built like that.

The correlation with reform voters is scary…
