love maps like this because they remind you islands can be politically close and still have completely different vibes about who they want to belong to. geography says one thing local identity says not so fast.
## 1946 Faroese independence referendum – Results
– **Independence:** 5,660 – **50.72%**
– **Union with Denmark:** 5,499 – **49.28%**
– **Valid votes:** 11,159 (95.87%)
– **Invalid/blank votes:** 481 (4.13%)
– **Total votes:** 11,640
– **Registered voters / Turnout:** 17,216 / 67.61%
Since islands don’t vote and people do, it would be more helpful to show the vote by population share etc
1,44% for, that was it. No turning back.
But aren’t they still a part of the kingdom of Denmark?
There’s a greedy land grabber towards the west who might see this as Welcome, help yourself.
There’s no true independence for a small island nation in our current world. Even if legally you’re not part of another country, you’ll always be dependent on who pays, because I’m sure there aren’t deep oil reserves under the Faroe islands and I’m sure their citizens aren’t willing to live like hunter gatherers.
